Chief Minister Katy Gallagher has launched a new Radiation Oncology Patient Information DVD, which provides information to patients about radiation therapy, along with the practical aspects of treatment.
“After a diagnosis of cancer, patients and their carers can experience a wide range of emotional and practical challenges in a diversity of treatment settings,” the Chief Minister said.
“The time of diagnosis can also be a period of strong emotions and information overload and this DVD will provide a way for patients to get a broad range of information at a time when they can better process it.
“People at our new Canberra Region Cancer Centre want to understand what may happen to them during active treatment, and access information in a variety of formats and this Patient Information DVD developed by ACT Health and produced by Southern Cross Media aims to educate Radiation Oncology patients and their carers.
“The DVD allows patients to visualise the machinery as this can be very daunting on their first visit and to understand what support services are available, Ms Gallagher said.
The DVD was developed with extensive input from current patients, and similar organisations nationally and internationally.
“Cancer treatment is a daunting and physically as well as emotionally challenging experience and anything we can do to make this a little easier is an invaluable tool,” the Chief Minister said.
“This also evidences the fact that sometimes it is the simple things in a process like cancer treatment that can provide a great deal of benefit and make a real difference in the patient experience.”
“I would like to thank and congratulate all those who have been integral in putting this DVD together and I am confident that their hard work will mean that many patients have a easier journey through their treatment.”
The Dry July Foundation provided funding for this initiative including production costs and funding for one thousand copies of the DVD, supported by the Canberra Hospital Foundation.
