canberra cat fix

Canberra Cat Fix is holding a trivia night as its first major fundraiser on 18 September.

The organisation raises funds to offer low-income families a way to desex their cat in an affordable way. This will provide financial assistance to struggling households, reduce the number of unwanted kittens, alleviate pressure from our local animal shelters and potentially prevent the number of stray cats from rising.

100% of proceeds on the night will go directly to desexing operations. Grab some colleagues or friends and support a local grassroots organisation.

When: Friday 18 September 2015
Time: 7.00pm
Where: Woden Tradies, Cnr Furzer/Launceston St, Woden
Cost: $30 per person (ticket price also includes a giant hot food platter for each table of 10)
Bookings: www.trybooking.com/ITPC

Agree about pets providing comfort, although as I live next door to a family who were given a cat, didn’t want it, it left, so they got another one which was swiftly adopted by another family in our street, I do wonder if people consider what else is involved in pet ownership?
BTW try crossing the border for vet treatment; Queanbeyan Vets are excellent, friendly and generally much cheaper than their ACT counterparts. Price for one rabbit neutering in ACT $400, price for 2 rabbits being neutered in NSW $280 complete with vaccinations!

You see fancy breeds of dog and cats in shelters more often than you’d think because people either don’t have time for that super cute labrador pup that grew into a boisterous dog, or they don’t want their adorable ragdoll cat anymore because it’s not a playful kitten now and it leaves fur everywhere. I’m hoping that as Canberra Cat Fix grows it can play a greater role in educating people (schoolkids included) about the responsibilities of having a pet, and that a pet is for life. Especially as cats can live into their 20s and most dogs can live into their late teens.

Not with that attitude!

Apparently doesn’t work on low income families either. Why do these families have an animal they can’t afford?

I think everyone has the right to have a pet. They can be of great comfort to people, especially our senior citizens or those who live alone.

A lot of what I see is people genuinely not realising how big the cost of desexing is. And honestly, I was shocked at the desexing prices in Canberra when I moved here and got a cat. It is much cheaper elsewhere. Some vets in Canberra charge $400-$500 and that’s not including microchipping, vaccinations, worming, flea treatment etc.

And sure, maybe there are some people that do realise the cost but get a pet anyway (absolute minority here from my experiences), at the end of the day they already have a cat so there’s nothing I can do about it. We just want to stop cats having kittens. I’m not going to deny someone subsidised desexing to teach them a lesson if it means hundreds more unwanted kittens are going to come into the world.

I think Canberra Cat Fix actually is quite valuable in educating people on responsible pet ownership. I’ve had lots of people come through the program that simply didn’t know about feline health complications, what the costs are etc and since having their cat desexed they’ve put a bit of money away each week in case their pet requires urgent medical attention. I think that’s pretty responsible pet ownership.

I should clarify too that it’s not cat trivia. It’s regular trivia with a cat bonus round 🙂
