I’ve been meaning to try lunch at the Waldorf on London for nearly a year now after reading Sophia Carlini’s Weekend Cafe Hot Spot review back in January. I finally got around to it this week and dragged my partner along too.
Like Sophia, I’d never eaten in a hotel restaurant before unless I was staying there and I also expected it to be kind of quiet but it was actually quite busy! We were lucky in that we got a table straight away – there were only a couple left.
I was planning to order the Waldorf has a $10 lunch special, for which three options were listed, but had only read about halfway down before the waiter took it from me and said they had run out of *all* the lunch special items. The specials had only been on offer for about 50 minutes (and had another hour and a bit left to run in theory) so I was kind of shocked/slightly annoyed.
That’s OK, I thought. The regular menu, while basic, still has a range of items for $15. Then the waiter told me that three items from the regular menu weren’t available any longer either. That literally left two items on the menu that were classified as a cheap eat.
I ordered a penne pasta dish with mushroom, broccoli and white wine sauce for $15. My partner ordered the club sandwich (not technically a cheap eat, it cost $16). And we waited. And waited. And waited. About thirty minutes later our meals came out.
My pasta was actually pretty good. It was a giant serving, lots of mushroom, good flavour. The only downfall was that it was a teeny bit oily. Other than that, I’d order it again. I really enjoyed it. My partner liked his club sandwich but he didn’t enjoy the fried egg which made a huge mess of his hands and plate.
The Waldorf Hotel seems like decent value, and I would probably go back but next time I’d arrive right as the lunch special was beginning – I don’t want to miss out again!
