Cheap eats - Waldorf on London (Civic)

I’ve been meaning to try lunch at the Waldorf on London for nearly a year now after reading Sophia Carlini’s Weekend Cafe Hot Spot review back in January. I finally got around to it this week and dragged my partner along too.

Like Sophia, I’d never eaten in a hotel restaurant before unless I was staying there and I also expected it to be kind of quiet but it was actually quite busy! We were lucky in that we got a table straight away – there were only a couple left.

I was planning to order the Waldorf has a $10 lunch special, for which three options were listed, but had only read about halfway down before the waiter took it from me and said they had run out of *all* the lunch special items. The specials had only been on offer for about 50 minutes (and had another hour and a bit left to run in theory) so I was kind of shocked/slightly annoyed.

That’s OK, I thought. The regular menu, while basic, still has a range of items for $15. Then the waiter told me that three items from the regular menu weren’t available any longer either. That literally left two items on the menu that were classified as a cheap eat.

I ordered a penne pasta dish with mushroom, broccoli and white wine sauce for $15. My partner ordered the club sandwich (not technically a cheap eat, it cost $16). And we waited. And waited. And waited. About thirty minutes later our meals came out.

My pasta was actually pretty good. It was a giant serving, lots of mushroom, good flavour. The only downfall was that it was a teeny bit oily. Other than that, I’d order it again. I really enjoyed it. My partner liked his club sandwich but he didn’t enjoy the fried egg which made a huge mess of his hands and plate.

The Waldorf Hotel seems like decent value, and I would probably go back but next time I’d arrive right as the lunch special was beginning – I don’t want to miss out again!

The cafes in Woden tend to sell out of the daily specials by about 1. Most people seem to take their lunches earlier these days. Cafes can’t take the risk of having food on their hands at the end of lunch time.

But yes, it would be a good idea if they advertised when the specials had finished.

There is a great chain of office lunch restaurants in Hong Kong that serves good cheap wholesome food, fast. Both buffet and cooked to order.

I really like their system of meals listed on slatted boards which they remove as they run out. Like a dutch auction. Encourages everyone to think and order fast.

Despite the fast large scale operation the service is really good and staff go out of their way to help “Gwai Lo” like me who may not understand the way it works.

you’d think that their offer of lunch specials should last pretty well through a lunch period – or be marketed as ‘limited’. i’d be pretty disappointed with that ruse, so shan’t be going (i often work nearby and was considering this from the title; but not now)

One of my favourite restaurants, Miso in Sydney” does this, but it took me a while to spot the “Only 20 served” note on the menu.

You have to look at this from the chef’s side. The limited number means no waste and tight control of the cost. To overstock for contingency is wasteful and costs extra.

A fried egg being messy on a sandwich: that’s the point. It’s delicious. To complain about that ? How very Canberran.

Not really. Most club sandwiches don’t have egg on them. Also, since when does messy = delicious? I haaaaate messy food and I did so well before moving to Canberra.

I really hate soft/runny egg on sandwiches or burgers as well, whenever I order something with an egg I ask for it to have a hard yolk. Granted, I don’t particularly like runny yolk at all but it’s about a thousand times worse when it’s running down your arm, never really understood why people would enjoy that.

Totally agree. Some claim runny is the best way to enjoy egg, but when you bite into a sandwich which is all warmed through and has texture, and in the middle is this luke warm to cool sort of goop, that’s not nice.

Another example of “There are two kinds of people…”

Probably the same people who demand their meat should be fried to a leathery consistency and reach for the salt, without ever tasting the food.

Yes, exactly! I don’t know if they’re just not normally busy and this day caught them by surprise or whether they just run out every day.

Most club sandwiches aren’t made on cheap white bread either.
