The Christmas season is in full swing as of this weekend. The Street Theatre presents Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol, an alternate telling of Dickens’ classic tale; Christmas in the City starts with a Guinness World Record attempt for most number of lights on an artificial Christmas tree; and the Undercurrent Design Market will help kick-off your purchases for the festive season.

Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol

The Street Theatre presents the “real story” behind Dickens’ Christmas Carol, where Jacob Marley works to save Scrooge in his own way, and also to save himself. One actor portrays 19 different characters to take you through the classic Christmas tale from a new perspective. Tickets on sale now.
Jazz & Shiraz in November at Lerida Estate
Where: Lerida Estate Winery, 87 The Vineyards, Collector NSW (off the Federal Highway); When: 10am-5pm
It’s the last weekend for Jazz & Shiraz at Lerida Estate. Visit Café Lerida for lunch, then head over to the Cellar Door to taste some Lerida wines alongside the Shiraz promotion they having running, enjoy some live jazz musicians, step outside for a game of Boules or complete the Lake George Range Walk.
DESIGN Canberra Festival
The DESIGN Canberra Festival begins this weekend and aims to put you in touch with the capital’s creative excellence. With over 750 participants and 70 activities over a nine-day program, there is something for everyone. The festival is divided into five streams: ACTivate pop-up projects in empty shopfronts, Capital of Culture design tours, the DESIGN Buzz lecture series, Living Artist open studios and Exhibitions. La Boheme

A painter, a musician, a philosopher and a poet, four poor friends living for their art … Join Rodolfo, Mimi, Marcello and Musetta as they journey through the highs and lows of love in Giacomo Puccini’s classic Italian opera, La Boheme. Canberra Opera presents 20-year-old classic in the newly refurbished Ainslie Arts Centre. Tickets cost a fraction of what you’d pay to see an opera in Sydney, and are available online.
Christmas in the City – Canberra Celebrates
Where: City Walk, Canberra City; When: 6pm-11pm (daily until 31 Dec)
So begins the Christmas season. Christmas in the City – Canberra Celebrates is a month-long joint initiative between SIDS & Kids ACT and In the City Canberra that lights up the city with markets, concerts, kids’ activities, camel rides and visits from Santa. On Friday at around 8.50pm, SIDS and Kids ACT will attempt to break the Guinness World Record title for most number of lights on an artificial Christmas tree. A Christmas concert featuring Play School regular Jay Laga’aia among other artists starts at 7pm.
Encounters
Where: National Museum of Australia, Acton Peninsula; When: 9am-5pm daily
Opening this weekend, Encounters showcases the history and the stories of rare Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander objects from the British Museum’s collection. Many of these objects have not been seen in Australian since they were first acquired during contact between early settlers and the First Australians. Free entry.
Undercurrent Design Market
Where: National Portrait Gallery, King Edward Terrace, When: Sat/Sun from 10am
Just in time for Christmas, the Undercurrent Design Market will be showcasing an array of contemporary Australian-made design wares. Pick something up now for the kids’ school teachers or hard-to-buy-for family members, before the silly season rush.
SATURDAY
Exhibition by Aboriginal Artist Michael (Garmarroongoo) Huddleston
Where: Burrunju Art Gallery, 245 Lady Denman Drive, Yarramundi Reach (near the zoo); When: 10am-4pm
See Arnhem Land myths and lore explored in the artwork of Michael (Garmarroongoo) Huddleston on this exhibition’s final day on Saturday. Huddleston’s work has been exhibited in Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands and Germany, as well as galleries across Australia. Entry is free.
Bake
Where: EQ Café & Lounge, 70 Kent Street, Deakin; When: 11.30am-3.30pm
The annual Canberra charity bake-off is on again, hosted by Fuse Magazine. You can register your own baked entry online and deliver it between 11.30 and 12, or just head along to the auction, eat delicious food and be surrounded by beautiful cakes. The categories are: Best Decorated Cake, Best Cup Cake, Best Savoury Bake, Best Jams & Preserves, Best Gluten Free, Best Fete Bake (slices, cookies, pastries, etc) and Best Kids Bake. Entry is $5 and there are $2000 in prizes to win. All entries will be sold afterwards to raise funds for PAWS – Pet Assistance and Wellbeing Service and the Canberra AIDS Memorial Park.
SUNDAY
Summer of the Seventeenth Doll
Where: National Portrait Gallery, King Edward Terrace; When: starts 1pm
This Sunday, the NPG welcomes Jim Adamik and Jordan Best to perform scenes from Summer of the Seventeenth Doll, and afterwards invites Karen Vicker, a past Head of Performance Practices at NIDA, to discuss the play’s significance in Australian Culture. Bookings are essential.
Free Gelato Day!
Where: The Green Shed Café, Garema Place, Canberra City; When: 11am-3pm
Normally hosted on a Friday, The Green Shed Café have moved their free gelato day to a Sunday as a special once-off. With free gelato and a jumping castle, how could you go wrong? (There is no free gelato Friday in December because the last Friday of December is Christmas Day.)
