This weekend, you have a multitude of options. But we’ve selected the top six things around Canberra that are must-see. First up, and running all weekend, is Enlighten: you can visit the Night Noodle Market, see the giant bunnies, be entertained by live acts (from comedians to trapeze artists), and of course, be awed by the national institutions lit up like Christmas trees. I’d also recommend the Collecting Nostalgia exhibition on at Canberra Glassworks – from experience, it’s a beautiful collection of objects. Finally, on Sunday, head to Thoroughbred Park to take part in Canberra’s premiere race day: the 2016 Mercedes-Benz Canberra Black Opal Stakes and tab.com.au Canberra Cup Race Day.

ALL WEEKEND

enlighten

Enlighten
Where
: Parliamentary Triangle (and other various locations); When: after 5pm, 4-12 March; Tickets: mostly free, some events are ticketed.
The national capital’s Parliamentary Triangle will be transformed into a vibrant arts precinct with free entertainment such as talented street artists and international musical acts – all set against a backdrop of stunning architectural projections that shine a light on some of Australia’s most iconic attractions. This year’s event also sees the return of the Enlighten Night Noodle Markets, creating a bustling atmosphere in the heart of the event with an array of authentic Asian eats, themed bars and live music.

collectingnostalgia

Collecting Nostalgia
Where: Canberra Glassworks, 11 Wentworth Avenue, Kingston; When: 10am – 4pm; Tickets: free
Collecting Nostalgia, curated by Aimee Frodsham explores ideas about collecting and art making, through the humble glass marble. Marbles can showcase great technical artistry, but they are also treasured objects imbued with memory. Canberra Glassworks has invited nine artists from across Australia to respond to the notion of collecting, using marbles as inspiration. Participating artists are Alexandra Chambers, Tom Moore, Emilie Patteson, Phoebe Porter, Danielle Rickaby, Jaan Poldaas, Jan Rigden-Clay, Trish Roan and Mikki Trail.

The Bald Archy Prize 2016
Where
: Watson Arts Centre, 1 Aspinall St, Watson; When: daily 10am – 4pm; Tickets: adults $5.00, concession $4.00.
The Bald Archy Prize is Australia’s eccentric art prize. Created in 1994 as a spoof of another more serious competition, the Bald Archy Prize provides a genuine opportunity for artists of all styles and standards to create portrait paintings of humour, dark satire, light comedy or caricature. Known internationally as the only art competition in the world to be judged by a sulphur-crested cockatoo named Maude, the satirical side of this event has its basis in the irreverent, larrikin Australian comic comment. Visit the exhibition at the Watson Arts Centre.

SATURDAY

Canberra Raiders vs Panthers
Where
: GIO Stadium Canberra, 21 Battye St, Bruce; When: 3pm; Tickets: available from Ticketek.
Be a part of the action at GIO Stadium for a Canberra Raiders home match when Raiders v Panthers. The 2016 season kicks off with a matchup against a youthful and exciting Panthers squad.

pearl

Pearl: The Janis Joplin Show
Where:
The Street Theatre, 15 Childers Street, Canberra; When: 8pm; Tickets: adult $39.00
On 4th October 1970 Janis Joplin was found dead from a heroin overdose and in spite of her inevitable self-destruction, Janis was headed for greater musical success with her critically acclaimed album ‘Pearl’. Pearl – The Janis Joplin Show is a jazz, blues, bohemian rock interpretational musical presentation, celebrating a woman who exploded onto the music scene and quickly became the queen of rock ‘n’ roll and mother of thrift shop vintage funk.

SUNDAY

2016 Mercedes-Benz Canberra Black Opal Stakes and tab.com.au Canberra Cup Race Day
Where
: Thoroughbred Park, Randwick Road, Lyneham; When: gates open 11.30am, racing from 1pm; Tickets: from $25.00.
Mercedes-Benz Black Opal Stakes and tab.com.au Canberra Cup is Canberra’s premiere race day. It is one of the more important autumn race days on the calendar, contested by top trainers both locally and interstate. The action takes place both on and off the track at Thoroughbred Park. Off the track: enter the Myer Fashions on the Field competition for ladies, men and couples while enjoying Food Alley, amusements for the kids and live music from Big Boss Groove

Thanks, @rommeldog56! Brumbies v Tahs is best match of the season, I reckon, and great to hear about the Domestic Violence Crisis Service donation.

Not only did the mighty Brumbies thrash the Waratahs 32 – 15, but over 20,000 fans attended at Canberra Stadium so $20K was donated to the Domestic Violence Crisis Service (DVCS) by the Brumbies.

So, well done to the Brumbies and to all who attended.

I enjoy Enlighten, it’s similar to White Nights elsewhere
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Night_festivals

Could I recommend local boutique choir Igitur Nos singing Vaughan Williams, Britten and Faure at St Pauls Anglican church, Manuka, on Sunday 6 March at 1:30pm. No cost but donation on exit appreciated. See more at https://www.facebook.com/igiturnos/

Hmmm…….also the Brumbies V the Waratahs at Canberra Stadium tonight. Lick off is at 7.40pm.

The Brumbies will be making a donation to the Domestic Violence Crisis Service (DVCS) based on attendance tonight. So, 20,000 people = $20k donation.

Plus, you get to support your local Brumbies against the old enemy – the Waratahs.

So, come on Canberra, get behind the Brumbies and turn up at Canberra Stadium tonight + support the DVCS too !!!!
