First up, and running all weekend, is Enlighten: you can visit the Night Noodle Market, see the giant bunnies, be entertained by live acts (from comedians to trapeze artists), and of course, be awed by the national institutions lit up like Christmas trees. I’d also recommend the Collecting Nostalgia exhibition on at Canberra Glassworks – from experience, it’s a beautiful collection of objects. Finally, on Sunday, head to Thoroughbred Park to take part in Canberra’s premiere race day: the 2016 Mercedes-Benz Canberra Black Opal Stakes and tab.com.au Canberra Cup Race Day.

Enlighten

The national capital’s Parliamentary Triangle will be transformed into a vibrant arts precinct with free entertainment such as talented street artists and international musical acts – all set against a backdrop of stunning architectural projections that shine a light on some of Australia’s most iconic attractions. This year’s event also sees the return of the Enlighten Night Noodle Markets, creating a bustling atmosphere in the heart of the event with an array of authentic Asian eats, themed bars and live music.
Collecting Nostalgia

Collecting Nostalgia, curated by Aimee Frodsham explores ideas about collecting and art making, through the humble glass marble. Marbles can showcase great technical artistry, but they are also treasured objects imbued with memory. Canberra Glassworks has invited nine artists from across Australia to respond to the notion of collecting, using marbles as inspiration. Participating artists are Alexandra Chambers, Tom Moore, Emilie Patteson, Phoebe Porter, Danielle Rickaby, Jaan Poldaas, Jan Rigden-Clay, Trish Roan and Mikki Trail.
The Bald Archy Prize 2016

The Bald Archy Prize is Australia’s eccentric art prize. Created in 1994 as a spoof of another more serious competition, the Bald Archy Prize provides a genuine opportunity for artists of all styles and standards to create portrait paintings of humour, dark satire, light comedy or caricature. Known internationally as the only art competition in the world to be judged by a sulphur-crested cockatoo named Maude, the satirical side of this event has its basis in the irreverent, larrikin Australian comic comment. Visit the exhibition at the Watson Arts Centre.

Pearl: The Janis Joplin Show

On 4th October 1970 Janis Joplin was found dead from a heroin overdose and in spite of her inevitable self-destruction, Janis was headed for greater musical success with her critically acclaimed album ‘Pearl’. Pearl – The Janis Joplin Show is a jazz, blues, bohemian rock interpretational musical presentation, celebrating a woman who exploded onto the music scene and quickly became the queen of rock ‘n’ roll and mother of thrift shop vintage funk.

Mercedes-Benz Black Opal Stakes and tab.com.au Canberra Cup is Canberra’s premiere race day. It is one of the more important autumn race days on the calendar, contested by top trainers both locally and interstate. The action takes place both on and off the track at Thoroughbred Park. Off the track: enter the Myer Fashions on the Field competition for ladies, men and couples while enjoying Food Alley, amusements for the kids and live music from Big Boss Groove
