The Federal Government has given the ACT Legislative Assembly power to make laws over corporations.
Chief Minister Jon Stanhope said the Territories Minister, Jim Lloyd, had notified him earlier this month the Self-Government Act had been amended, as foreshadowed earlier this year.
“While the amendment is unlikely to have a noticeable impact on the lives of many Canberrans, it is symbolically important, putting the ACT on an equal footing with other jurisdictions,” Mr Stanhope said.
He also used the opportunity to call again for an amendment to make the Legislative Assembly larger and to hit out at Opposition leader Brendan Smyth for not co-operating with the government and the Greens on this matter.
