For those of us that live in the Canberra region, we know we are privileged to quite a unique lifestyle. Easy access to the benefits of city life with a plethora of stellar restaurants and bars scattered throughout our suburbs with the added advantage of being surrounded by the bush capital’s natural beauty.
Part of the uniqueness of life in Canberra is also being close to world-class producers and in winter that means truffles! In fifteen minutes, you can go from having a coffee in Braddon surrounded by the inner city high-density apartments, to the lush rolling hills of The Truffle Farm at Mt Majura who are at the forefront of a burgeoning truffle industry in the capital.
Jayson Mesman, Founder & Director of The Truffle Farm had previously worked for over a decade as a canine handler and instructor for Australia’s premier law enforcement agencies. With his experience, Jayson takes a professional approach in training his exceptional team of dogs to hunt for ripe truffles. Under his management and vision, thousands of people over the years have been able to enjoy Canberra grown truffles through hunts, onsite cooking school, collaborations with local and interstate restaurants. Now with the help of Executive Chef, Damian Brabender from the award-winning Otis Dining Hall in Kingston, they are making truffles more accessible to the public.
The Funguys is a pop-up eatery housed in a shipping container making a home for itself at the front gate of The Truffle Farm just as you turn off Mount Majura Rd. Selling universally loved foods – burgers and fries with the addition of truffles.
Currently open from 10:00 am on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, the set up is a simple affair of a few trestle tables and chairs or there are plenty of logs to get comfortable on and we also spied some diners feasting using their car bonnets as a makeshift counter. It is all very rustic and charming with the tasty food making up for any lack of amenities.
The current menu is short, sweet and packs a truffle loaded punch. Items available include, Egg & Bacon Roll with truffle mayo, local bacon, free-range eggs and shavings of truffle and the tremendously tasty and moreish Real Truffle Loaded Fries featuring truffle salted chips with truffle mayo, plus shavings of pecorino and fresh truffle.
There are four different options for the burger selections, two of which are beef, the Little Truffle Burger with a Funguy patty, truffle cheese, truffle mayo and shavings of fresh truffle or the Big Truffle Burger which has the additions of truffle butter, egg, bacon and pickled daikon. For vegetarians, the Funguy Burger contains portobello mushroom, pine mushroom butter, truffle brie and fresh truffle.
To accompany my order of Real Truffle Loaded Fries, I picked the Truffle-Dactyl Burger with truffle wood roast chook, truffle brie, truffle mayo topped with shavings of truffle. The chicken is wood roasted onsite inside the shipping container and the cooking aroma in the air as I was biting into the burger was a great combination.
For those wanting to extend the truffle pleasure, the Funguys also sell fresh truffles along with some pre-made goods for the home including truffle salt and butter.
Funguys is located at The Truffle Farm at 23 Mount Majura Road, Majura and is open from 10:00 am on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until sold out.
