Planning to be in the public service for 20 years?

The ABC brings word of concern at the National Archives over moves to release information after 20 years instead of 30.

“What we’re talking about is national security essentially, and personal sensitivity … 20 years can be mid career or operationally for a national security issue, it can be still a live operation,” he said.

“The risk is increased enormously, we have to be that much more careful.”

It’s going to be one hell of a data dump when a whole decade gets released instead of the usual single year.

One can’t help thinking the Hawke Government is going to get less than usual historical scrutiny under this move.

UPDATE: Apparently the information will be released at double the rate to catch up rather than as a single dump.

It was an understood thing when the Archives/FOI Acts were passed that the release periods would ‘collide’.

The national security risk is a ridiculous claim. Any files with ongoing sensitivities remain sealed. Just ask anyone who has tried to access old DFAT files for certain countries.

They won’t dump them all at once – I’ve actually looked at the Archives Act revisions, and they’ll be releasing two years’ worth at a time until they catch up, between 2011 and 2021. So no free pass for the Hawke government. Given that files aren’t automatically examined when they become open, but rather when they’re requested, I suggest this is Ross Gibbs grandstanding over funding (with some justification, it’s true, since they nearly had to close three offices).

But hey, let’s not let facts get in the way of a good story!

I have seen a lot of people get certificates for 20 years in the APS. this will be an interesting move.
