Messing with the WWI galleries at the War Memorial

The Canberra Times has the sad news that the ever expanding bureaucracy of the War Memorial has run out of things to do and have now set their sights on the First World War galleries.

at this stage we are looking in a very preliminary [stage] at how much space we have, what are the stories we have to tell, what are the things that we have and have to stay … what kind of experiences the public requires, how to enhance the dioramas, all these sorts of things are being thought about.

Because museum bureaucrats don’t advance their careers by leaving things as they find them.

Good. Almost all the other galleries in the AWM have been refurbished over the last 10 years, and they’ve all come out much the better for it. The WW1 gallery is very old fashioned and dull compared to, say, the WW2 gallery and most of its displays have been there so long that they’ve become historical artifacts in their own right. I hope that they keep (most of) the dioramas and the guy sitting in the mud, but it seems safe to assume that they’ll be retained and there’s lots of room for improvement.

…hopefully the AWM also does something about the rather odd colonial era gallery which they seem so embarrassed about that it’s now hidden away behind the special exhibits area on the basement level.
