Unearthed Review continues its inexorable progress through the Canberra musicians on the TripleJ Unearthed website.
Moving on through the “drummed” artists we come to Savages.
They have this to say about themselves:
savages write songs that are cast on delicate guitar melodies and minimal electronic textures. carefully considered songwriting that cuts out loose ends. four improvisers trying hard to dance in a discotheque. with no success.
It’s hard to dislike Savages. It’s hard to like them.
It’s hard to really have any opinions at all about this music, unless one is an insomniac looking for something to summon the sandman. (In which case it would be superb)
Bloop, bleep, vocoded moaning, loop and repeat.
There’s a place for this sort of stuff. Elevators, jeans stores, doctor’s waiting rooms.
It wouldn’t be bad to have on while studying.
Unobtrusive is a word jumping to mind.
It’s true that Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead can get away with this sort of stuff, but it should be noted those acts produced ball tearing music that changed the world before deciding to shuffle loops into retirement.
