Unearthed Review continues its inexorable progress through the Canberra musicians on the TripleJ Unearthed website.
Moving on through the “drummed” artists we come to The Modgeulator.
They have this to say about themselves:
“The tune had been haunting London for weeks past. It was one of countless similar songs published for the benefit of the proles by a sub-section of the Music Department. The words of these songs were composed without any human intervention whatever on an instrument known as a versificator.”
–George Orwell, ‘1984’
THE MODGEULATOR also plays synths and samplers in Cool Weapon and was once a winner in the Noise 2003 Remix competition.
The following questions go through the mind after these songs start playing:
- 1. What the hell is this?
2. Can I have whatever he’s on?
3. How much did he have to pay his friends to give these positive reviews?
4. Is this inspired by Butters’ tap dance number on South Park?
5. Do all these songs sound the same?
Some in the Eagles Nest went so far as to describe it as elevator music.
And yet…
These are happy, weird little tunes. They lift the spirits and tap the toes.
You wouldn’t want to drive to Byron with nothing to listen to but these three tracks.
But a bit like a Ween number the odd one popping up in a playlist will probably make your life that little bit brighter.
Three stars.
