In the secluded tree-lined streets of O'Connor lies a circa 1950s cottage where traditional style meets modern elegance. Historic charm is at the forefront of the property, with the owner retaining many of the cottage's original features while maintaining a focus on sustainability and practical living. It's for sale through Greg Ward & Jen Ward Real Estate, but you can see it now on Zango.

Jennifer Ward from Ward Estate Agents says that when renovating, the owners were careful not to rob its character.
“The original cedar windows and doors provide a gorgeous authenticity to the home that enhances its appeal while also integrating perfectly with the overall modern aesthetic,” she says.
Several details remain, down to the doorbell, the meshed air vents in the wall, and even the linen cupboard doors, but all lovingly restored.
“It’s all these beautiful little touches that she’s tried to mix old with new, and she’s done it seamlessly. They absolutely work.”
Jennifer describes the floorplan as “practical and appealing”, taking in both the original and renovated sections.
“Occupying a 700 square metre parcel of land and positioned to take advantage of its northerly aspect, the home evokes a soothing sense of calm that is underpinned by its flowing floorplan, neutral tones and the tranquil garden outlook from every room.”
An open-plan sunken living area encompasses the kitchen, lounge and dining rooms, with a study nook thrown in for good measure. The kitchen includes an induction cooktop, pyrolytic self-cleaning oven and dishwasher.
The living space also scores ‘hydronic’ in-slab heating, an extremely cost-effective way to keep the temperature just right.
There’s plenty of space to entertain thanks to the double French doors leading out to two decked areas on either side of the living room.
The original section of the house includes the four bedrooms, three of which share access to a well-appointed bathroom. The master bedroom includes a walk-in wardrobe and ensuite.
“It’s very classy, simple. It’s definitely a home for a family or executive couple. It’s not super large, but it’s certainly very comfortable.”
While renovating, the owner also tried to factor in sustainable solutions wherever possible. All the walls are wrapped in two layers of insulation and many of the windows are double glazed. There are also 18 solar panels on the roof while all the plumbing and electrical wiring has been replaced. The garden includes a 5000-litre water tank.
The end result is an energy rating of 5.5.
“For a home of this vintage, it’s incredible,” Jennifer says.
The rest of the property includes mature, established gardens with irrigation, large storage shed, and a single carport with home access.
“The location is key as well, with easy access to local schools, the Australian National University, and the city.”
