It’s all going down in Canberra this week, with French film festivals, parliamentary tours, flower mazes, and more. Come see what we’ve found for you to do in the Capital this week.

Kulata Tjuta: Tirkilpa. Art Installation.

Where: Level 1, Gallery 15, National Gallery of Australia, Parkes Place East, Parkes
Cost: Free.

Kulata Tjuta is a project of cultural maintenance, centralising the punu kulata (wooden spear) as an object that embodies the craft traditions of the people of the Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara land and as a cultural symbol in itself. The project keeps culture alive through the physical practice of carving and whittling to create objects of importance. The spears are then used in multi-disciplinary art pieces incorporating film, sound, live performance and installations.

Cinephiles rejoice! This week’s selection of movies at the NFSA has been announced, with a great mix of 90s heart-warming comedies, romance and a century-old silent film thrown in for good measure.

Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation explores love and loneliness between two ex-pats in the bustling metropolis of Tokyo.

For some old Hollywood magic, check out Saturday’s showing of 1940’s Pinocchio.

For some old old Hollywood magic, there is a screening of the 1926 Buster Keaton comedy The General, telling the tale of a railway engineer during the US Civil War who has to get his train back from the enemy, as well as save his sweetheart.

Make sure not to miss the Sunday screening of Forrest Gump, the beloved feel-good favourite with Tom Hanks.

Every March the Majura Valley Farm Sunflower Maze brings a splash of colour to the area. Visitors are welcome to lose themselves in a huge field of towering sunflowers and reconnect with the outdoors. Whether you want to take the family somewhere calm and pleasant on the weekend, or you have a special someone in mind to share it with, it’s a great way to spend the last few warm weeks before Autumn makes its presence felt.

The Nature of Things: An Enlighten Festival event

When: 7 March to 10 March, 5 pm to 10 pm
Where: Glebe Park
Cost: Free.

After dark, the Enlighten Festival turns Glebe Park into an enchanted forest with great luminescent creatures to call it home. Though they peak around corners and try to evade detection, the strange giants in this interactive storytelling experience can’t help but be spotted. It’s a great event to inspire wonder in young ones as they explore a park-turned-enchanted-forest.

French Film Festival 2025 at Palace Cinema

When: 7 March to 13 March

Enlighten at the National Portrait Gallery

Marri Ngarr artist Ryan Presley challenges power structures and questions the ideologies enforced by traditional portraiture through his works, using the iconography of Christianity to tell heroic stories of resistance to colonialism. The striking colours and effective use of icons and symbols like St George and haloes make the work rich in visual language and a treat to pick apart with the eyes.

Australian Yarn Show

The Canberra & District Historical Society proudly present the 2025 Canberra Day Oration. Gary Humphries AO will deliver the 2025 address: Has ACT self-government been a success?

Gary Humphries, as both a former member of the Legislative Assembly and its first historian, seeks to answer that question by reflecting on 36 years of territory self-government.

There is the option to attend this event both in-person or online.
