While allegedly stealing doughnuts and drinks from a servo, an accused robber is said to have “shattered” an employee’s tooth with repeated punches to the face.
Nick Parlov, 31, has been charged with robbery, intentionally inflicting grievous bodily harm and resisting police over the allegations.
He reportedly went into a 7-Eleven petrol station in Spence at around 2 pm on Saturday (15 March).
He allegedly took several energy drinks and doughnuts, then went to leave without trying to pay.
It is alleged that when he was confronted by staff, he became aggressive and punched a male employee in the head five to six times, causing facial injuries.
Less than two hours later, police found Parlov on a motorcycle on Kingsford Smith Drive. He was arrested and police allegedly found stolen items in his bag.
Parlov faced the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday (17 March), supported by family members, and applied for bail, which was opposed by the prosecution.
During the application, he stood up when the prosecutor was speaking, began ranting and called the prosecutor a “c-t”.
“Your Mum’s here, don’t be silly in front of your Mum,” Magistrate James Lawton told him.
“Who’s the most important person in the world? Your Mum.”
“Sorry, your honour,” Parlov said. He sat down.
His lawyer, Alyssa Zanardo from Legal Aid, said he had been living with family in Evatt and had been accepted into an ACT Housing property in Taylor.
She said he was diagnosed with schizophrenia, for which he received monthly depot injections, had recently broken his foot and “has no need to go back to the 7-Eleven in question”.
The prosecutor argued Parlov had been undeterred by the presence of others during his alleged robbery, which had been captured on CCTV.
He alleged the employee had been left with a fracture to his tooth after it had been “shattered” by the punches to his face.
Magistrate Lawton accepted there was a likelihood of reoffending if Parlov was released, given his ongoing mental health conditions, but also said he was satisfied the proposed bail conditions could ameliorate the risks.
The magistrate said family would supervise Parlov and would continue his treatment for his mental health.
Bail was granted and the matter was adjourned to 16 April.
