UPDATED 3 pm: Another Canberra school has been listed as a COVID-19 exposure site.
A person who was possibly infectious with COVID-19 visited the campus of Covenant Christian School in Gordon on Friday, 15 November.
The campus remains open, Minister for Health Rachel Stephen Smith confirmed this afternoon, although she was unsure if the case was a student or teacher.
This takes the total number of school campuses exposed to the virus to 22 since the beginning of November.
Given the 25 cases recorded overnight is the highest number of daily cases in almost a month, Ms Stephen-Smith sought to reassure the community that this was not unexpected.
“We’ve been saying for some time that we expect our cases to increase as we move around and gather more,” she said.
“It’s too early to say whether this is the start of a broader trend.”
She thanked the community for a strong response in coming out to get tested this week after more than 4,000 tests were recorded on Monday and over 2,000 negative test results came through overnight.
Ms Stephen-Smith wasn’t sure what led to this spike in the turnout for testing, however.
Furthermore, she flagged that with Cabinet expected to discuss a pilot program for the use of rapid antigen testing in schools this afternoon, an update on the subject should be expected tomorrow.
