Ana’s start

Ntp 2 July 2007 3

Apparently there is a new Slavic lass drawing attention on the world tennis circuit; namely Ana IVANOVIC. Another pretty tennis poppet rocketing up the ranks (she’s currently world #6) is no real surprise nor will it be if she doesn’t stay there long. What I did find odd in the UK Telegraph story was that;

“her new hordes of admirers may be unaware that she won her first major tournament in Canberra as a 17-year-old”.

Now I make no claims to be a tennis guru and so would like someone to explain to me how a Tier IV Tournament that was only held for 6 years under 4 different names and was cancelled this year could be called a “major”.

Ana’s wiki page can be found here and her official website here.

The Women’s singles draw for the remainder of this year’s Wimbledon tournament is here and those interested in the now defunct Canberra Women’s Tennis Classic can find it here.

Maybe the article came from the CT initially ?

Does she keep a pair of balls up her skirt like that Russian player?

Depends on which year she won. For the first year at least it was actually a WTA (not ITA) tier 2 tournament.
