Best of Canberra – Indian

By Bec Cuzzillo - 16 June 2015 31

indian food

Indian food is much like Indian dancing – exciting, colourful, a little bit saucy and a lot spicy. I know I say this most weeks about most foods, but Indian is definitely one of my favourite cuisines.

My love of Indian food began when I worked in an Indian restaurant during high school and really took hold when I spent a month travelling in India as a uni student. That’s where I learnt that curry is appropriate any time of day – yes, even for breakfast – and all hot drinks are sweetened with a mountain of sugar.

While I am yet to find somewhere that does Indian like India, I know that there are plenty of restaurants in Canberra that almost get there. Whether you like a mild korma or a spicy vindaloo, I want to know who serves up your favourite Indian in town.

To vote, let me know who makes Canberra’s best Indian in the comments below. I’ll try the two most popular places and let you know the verdict in next Monday’s Taste Off article.

What’s Your opinion?

There is a lot of great Indian these days, but Rama’s.

Best food but also massive credit to Minnie, best customer service in Canberra.

Taj Mahal on Northbourne in Civic. Consistently good – chicken moghlai is a must.

Ruchi’s for South Indian thali. 7 Village for the fresh paneer and authentic salt lassi.

Indian Affair in the City (I haven’t tried the Phillip version). They are amazing and regularly do cheap Living Social Deals.

I too am a Mirchis fan and will try NH8 tonight

NH8 is a newish restaurant at Yerrabi Pond in Gungahlin – it wins hands down. The food is like no Indian I’ve had before and the prices are great.

Sadly, it’s a long way from home for us, so Rama’s is a close second. Their mango chicken has been outstanding for as long as I can remember.

Indian Affair in Phillip. Absolutely drool worthy. I’m yet to try the one in the city, hopefully it’s just as good. The punjabi murgh masala is superb.

I’ve always found Ramas to be overrated.

Mirchi at the Ngunnawal shops is tops. Also Rama’s.

I haven’t been for a few years now, but when I was still in the inner north I used to like a frequent visit to Bollywood Masala in Dickson. Have been to the one in Kingston a couple of times and it has hit the spot just as well as Dickson too.

Punjabi Hut in Manuka!!!! And if you eat in and get the banquet, it includes unlimited naan and rice.

Masala Hut at Cooleman Court.

I’ve been going there for years and it has never disappointed. Their goat curries are particularly tasty.

Masala Hut is our go to Indian restaurant. The special dinner packs ($41 for two people or $80 for four) are really good value, and the food is great.

That said, my vote this week goes to Ramas. Can’t beat it – though it can get busy on weekends!

Ramas (Fijian Indian) is a bit of an institution in the south of Canberra which has never dropped off in popularity.

Ramas in Pearce, hands down the best in Canberra.

Beware of any Indian restaurant that offers all dishes ‘mild, medium or hot’. Each dish in Indian cuisine has its own taste and should not be tampered with.
