You know those people that walk into a shop and spend most of their time repeating phrases like, “Oh wow, look at this!”
That’s me when I find myself inside a good delicatessen. And when I do, I could spend hours deliberating over whether to get this feta or that feta, stuffed green olives or marinated kalamatas, prosciutto or salami – the options are endless.
So you can imagine, when I put the call out for Canberra’s best deli, I was pretty excited to see who got the people’s vote. Way out in front with the most votes was Planet Deli at the Fyshwick Fresh Food Markets, followed by Ainslie IGA.
On Friday morning I dropped by the Ainslie IGA on my way to work. I’d never been there before and was impressed by the long deli counter that greets every customer that comes through the door.
They call it the “Ainslie Pantry” and it has a big selection of deli meats, cheeses and olives. For an independent grocer tucked away in one of Canberra’s suburbs, Ainslie IGA sets itself apart with its quality deli offerings.
It was Saturday morning when I made my way out to the Fyshwick Fresh Food Markets to check out Deli Planet. As one of the three delis in the complex, Deli Planet has a bit of competition, but certainly rises to the challenge.
It was my first visit and I quickly found myself in that excited state, rushing from counter to counter looking at all the goodies on offer.
The shop is big, with counters that run almost the entire perimeter of the store and it has every deli meat, cheese and other delicacy you can imagine. They even sell snail shells if you’re into the occasional escargot.
It’s safe to say that Deli Planet knocked my deli-loving socks off. While the Ainslie IGA has a quality deli counter and is definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area, Deli Planet is this week’s winner and, in my opinion, the best delicatessen in town.
