Bomb Scare in Civic ?

Can anyone shed some light as to why the entire block (Alinga, Moore, Northboure, Rudd St) was sealed off by Police this afternoon at 5pm when i walked past ?

Police had the tape out and were standing on and between all street corners of this block. After asking a bystander i was told there had been a couple of suspicious packages found. As i was being told this information, a loud explosive sound belowed from the block turning many heads in the general direction.

It sounded like backfire from a hotted up Datsun 120Y but i’d just like to make sure it wasn’t something else.

Does anyone know what was going on ?

Annie,
2CC had a reporter there, their traffic reporter was also covering it from the air, and the presnter was keeping the story up-to-date.

Anyway, I was citing my main source of information, which I obviously misheard some of while I was doing other things.

Can you explain your phrase, “2CC were one of the few media agencies to know anything” about this?

Did they have an item in the news, or did one of the DJs mention something?

Unless everyone knows they don’t work, which we do now.

CCTV camera’s don’t have to be working for them to be a deterant.

So many Datsun google ads!

There was a story in the CT today about it, but since it was on p3 or thereabouts, it hasn’t made it onto the web.

K

Dunno Bloodnut, multiple city blocks cordoned off because some doof was so stupid as to leave his bag unnattended seems like news to me.

Anyway the irony of the Chief Minister calling for MORE CCTV’s seems very strange given the lack of reliability in the system. Unless they’re a little more reliable than some would have us believe?

Sam, I think the reason that it may not have made the cut on Win News or ABC online is the same reason touring bands, Australian Idol and big name rugby league players avoid Canberra.

They think it’s a big non-event.

Actually, after reading the NineMSN article, it turns out that the package was found at 2pm, and turned out to be a forgotten suticase of clothes.

The Comrade (according to NineMSN) urgently wants more CCTV cameras now.

NineMSN story here.

Yep, 2CC were one of the few media agencies who seemed to know anything.

Sometime between 16:00 & 16:30 some suspicious packages were found in the area between the Jolimont Centre & The Novotel Hotel (Is that what it’s called). The area, including surrounding streets, was sealed off and evacuated while the police investigated. At some stage (around the time you were there Jay) the police used a controlled explosion or two to destroy the suspicious packages.

I don’t know if the packages were dangerous or not, but I have doubts that the police would have had a controlled explosion if they weren’t.

None the less, it backed up traffic along Nourthbourne Ave & surrounding streets for quite some time, and I am led to believe that the police did some traffic directing to try to calm the congestion.

I was somewhat amazed to not find the story in the headlines on Win News, or ABC online, and yet I did find it on NineMSN, anybody know why?

I’m just glad I knew about it by listening to the radio because I was planning on visiting the Alinga St post office and have now delayed my visit until tommorow.
