I want to pay a compliment to my favourite battler, Phyllis who works behind the counter at Brumbys bake shop in Ainslie.
She has a voice like a crow (sorry Phyllis!) looks pretty arthritic and long in the tooth and bitches about behind-the-scenes from time to time, but she is just wonderful – starts at sparrow’s fart and I’m sure she’s paid a pittance.
She is a gem and I hope she isn’t difficult to work with – and that the manager there knows what she’s worth.
I actually don’t like Brumbys bread and I buy there just to keep Phyllis in work I think!
Are there any gems among the apparent crankies on staff whose value business managers should be aware of?
It’s fine seeing young things behind the counter but when you really notice someone older, and realise suddenly how infrequently there are older people in those working-class jobs these days, you wonder whether there’s age discrimination going on … where have they all gone?
