After 89 years, Braidwood Bakery is set to move from its home at 99 Wallace Street to a new, larger building down the road later this year.

Bakery owner Keith Woodman said he’s waiting on council approval to start construction and hopes to have the new bakery ready in time for Christmas.

Currently, the new site at 87-91 Lascelles Street is a vacant block that will require extensive construction.

“It will be a brand new building,” said Mr Woodman. “The parking is going to be tenfold and there will be a bigger cooking area.

“There will be an undercover area for patrons, and a lot of beautiful landscaping. It will look special.”

Mr Woodman said he is moving “with reluctance” but that the bakery’s existing location doesn’t have enough parking for customers.

“The main street is getting busier and the only thing holding back the bakery’s growth is the parking,” he said.

The new premise will also allow staff at Braidwood Bakery to bake more goods onsite.

Currently, pies are made at Mr Woodman’s other bakery, Trapper’s, in Goulburn, and transported to Braidwood Bakery.

He said the bigger premises will also allow the team to grow by about 25 per cent.

“At the moment, we’ve got a staff of 35,” he said.

Braidwood Bakery was purchased by Mr Woodman in 2005. It was originally opened by the Leeson family in 1932.

“It was well known and had a very good name,” he said.

Around the same time, Mr Woodman, a builder, also took over the block next to the bakery and extended the building. He added a spacious dining area, restrooms and more counter space.

Mr Woodman said his love of baking is inspired by camping with his father.

“We used to be out cooking dampers,” he said. “It’s amazing how it came back to me. It was always a dream of mine to get into the baking industry.”

Never understood the attraction. Terrible overpriced food, rude staff. Especially when there are lovely places just up and down the street.
