A Canberra barrister has said she will work with “integrity and excellence” after being appointed to a new role at an independent body.
Theresa Warwick has been announced as a new presidential member of the ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal (ACAT).
“I am delighted to be joining the senior leadership team of the ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal, which is a vital part of the ACT justice system,” she said.
“I look forward to working with all members and staff of the tribunal as we continue to resolve disputes and deliver justice, with integrity and excellence, for the ACT community.”
She has been serving as an acting sessional presidential member of the tribunal since June 2024. Members can be appointed on a full-time, part-time or sessional basis.
Ms Warwick has nearly 25 years of experience at the private bar, extensive expertise in criminal law and a strong background in tribunal work.
Her seven-year appointment will start on 1 April.
ACT Attorney-General Tara Cheyne welcomed Ms Warwick on her new role.
“I am delighted to welcome Theresa Warwick as a presidential member of ACAT. Her wealth of experience in both legal practice and tribunal work, coupled with her community involvement, makes her an exceptional addition to the tribunal,” she said.
“Ms Warwick’s dedication to justice and her proven track record in decision-making will be invaluable to ACAT and the ACT community.
“Her appointment underscores our commitment to maintaining a high-calibre, diverse, and experienced membership within the tribunal.”

Throughout her career, Ms Warwick has held various roles within the Territory’s legal system. She was a Special Magistrate between 2019 and 2020 and has served as Deputy Chair of the Sentence Administration Board since May 2023.
Also, she was an ordinary ACAT member between 2017 and 2020, before being appointed a senior member in 2020.
In a statement, ACT Bar Council President Brodie Buckland congratulated Ms Warwick on her appointment.
“The Association warmly congratulates presidential member Warwick on her appointment, and wishes her well in her new role,” the statement said.
The announcement of her new role follows the appointments of Sydney barrister Dr Juliet Lucy as a presidential member in May 2024 and Mary-Therese Daniel as ACAT president in September 2023.
