The Canberra Centre has confirmed the store that’s taking the place of Zara on level one and – makeup connoisseurs rejoice – it’s a mega Mecca.

Hair and beauty brand Mecca already has a presence in the centre but this will close and relocate to the 1500 sqm space between Polo Ralph Lauren and Coffee Club to form one of its largest stores in Australia.

Described as a “flagship concept store”, it will boast private “beauty rooms” and offering brands not seen in Mecca’s smaller stores.

This announcement coincides with reconfiguration and upgrade works that commenced at the centre in January, said to “enhance the shopping experience for both customers and retail partners”.

Works will include the creation of new and reconfigured tenancies throughout the whole of Ainslie Mall on level one, including at Aje and Watches of Switzerland.

Upgrades will also be made to the roof and façade of Bunda Bridge.

GreenHouse Coffee will relocate elsewhere in the centre, and a new Chanel Fragrance and Beauty store is coming soon.

“These works represent the ongoing evolution of retail and lifestyle offerings at Canberra Centre to better meet the needs of our customers now and in the future, including the introduction of new-to-market brands and flagship concept stores and the redeployment of existing brands,” Canberra Centre general manager Gary Stewart says.

“We look forward to sharing more information about our exciting plans for the centre once all commercial details have been finalised.”

Everything is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2025, subject to delays.

Zara will close its doors for the last time on Sunday, 2 March, in line with their 2024 announcement to close 1200 stores worldwide as they pivot towards a “more digitally focused future and a stronger online presence”.

Despite an earlier report, the Canberra Centre has confirmed the BOSS store, also on level one, is not closing and will remain.

The centre says it will release more information on the upgrades, including new retailers, in the coming weeks.

For goodness sake! Please stop with these mega, flagship stores. Please find a way for small, interesting, even local businesses, to exist in Civic. At the moment, we might as well be shopping at an airport.
