Since the outlet shopping model was introduced from the United States in the 1980s, the popularity of outlet centres has grown every decade.
Gone are the days of incomplete sets, missing sizes and damaged items. Rather than being seen as a poor relation, outlet centres are now considered more like a retail adventure with shoppers hoping to find items from popular brands at unbeatable, one-off prices.
With most people tightening their belts due to the rising cost of living, shoppers are adopting budget-stretching strategies and making outlet centres a destination of choice for those wanting a bargain.
So why are the prices so low and how do outlet centres work?
For the big brands, outlets are seen as a controlled and profitable way to sell as much stock as possible.
This generates revenue while making space for new stock. It also removes the need to keep space dedicated to sale items in regular stores.
Outlets are also seen as a way of attracting new customers, those who might not usually buy from a brand at full price but may go on to do so in the future.
You won’t always find the same items in an outlet store as you will in a regular store. Outlet stores are usually stocked with products from previous seasons that brands bring back for a discounted price, as well as excess and clearance stock.
Prices are typically deeply discounted off the original selling price with further reductions of up to 70 per cent in clearance areas.
While you can buy many of these discounted items online, you get to try them on and save on delivery and returns by going to an outlet centre.
“Shopping in one place with hundreds of well-known brands at outlet prices is the perfect way to enjoy the thrill of smart shopping,” Canberra Outlet marketing manager Kithtaw Pon says.
“At Canberra Outlet you can find the best of classic and seasonal collections from renowned brands at unbeatable prices.”
Kithtaw says it makes sense to shop at an outlet centre for formal attire in particular.
“Formal wear is not as fast trending as other clothing, making it perfect for outlet shopping – and Canberra Outlet has plenty of options.
“Coming into formal season, we want to help school leavers get a gorgeous suit or dress for a more affordable price.
“But whether you are shopping for a formal, a ball or a wedding, you will find dozens of known brands at discounted prices here at Canberra Outlet.
“With so many brands and a variety of fashion, footwear, accessories and even hair and nails under one roof, you can get everything you need to attend your formal, no matter what you are looking for.”
Canberra Outlet has a selection of hybrid stores offering new season and previous season collections at affordable prices.
The centre prides itself on offering the big names in men’s formal wear including MJ Bale, Peter Jackson, Johnny Big, Connor, Van Heusen, YD and Tarocash.
“Shopping at Canberra Outlet offers an affordable, one-stop, shopping experience without compromising on quality,” Kithtaw says.
