Cheap eats - Mountain Creek (Griffith)

A few weeks back when we did a callout for new Cheap Eats locations, there were a few comments left regarding the healthiness (or lack thereof) of the meals featured in the Cheap Eats articles. I previously reviewed two salads at Double Drummer, but because one salad was pasta-based, it wasn’t as healthy as some would prefer.

So this week, I set off to find a really healthy lunch for under $15 and discovered it at Mountain Creek Wholefoods in Griffith.

Mountain Creek is 80% a health food store, and 20% a cafe or as they describe it, an organic kitchen. You walk through the whole store, past shelves of vitamins and herbal supplements and baskets of fresh fruit and vegetables, until you reach the back of the store where you’ll find a tiny counter and sandwich bar set up.

There are a few different options here. You can have a wrap made up while you wait, or opt for something else like a slice of pre-made frittata, lasagne, or order a curry or a vegie-based pie.

I opted for the vegie burger wrap ($10.50) and a bottle of ‘Lemmy’, an organic lemonade ($4.00). Essentially, my meal was a vegie pattie paired with about 30 kilos of fresh salad, all tucked into a Mountain Bread wrap.

There is no seating inside Mountain Creek, however there are some tables and chairs outside that belong to the shops. I sat outside in the sun to devour my wrap.

It was amazing. The vegie pattie had so much flavour, and the wrap came with hummus and a light yoghurt sauce. It was giant and I couldn’t finish it. I will definitely be back – perhaps to try a frittata next time!

Yay! My go to lunch when I didn’t bring in my lunch. I can’t eat one of the veggie wraps without getting half of it all over my face. When they have the mexican bean pie on, give that a go – delicious. Just don’t feed those friendly magpies if you are sitting outside on those chairs.
