Cheap eats - PappaRich (Civic)

For today’s cheap eats I thought I’d go and check out the newly opened PappaRich in the Canberra Centre.

Now if you haven’t been to a PappaRich before (there are a few in Melbourne and other states) then you wouldn’t know about their bizarre ordering system. You are firstly seated at a table (one I felt cramped at), then you are asked to check out the extensive menu and write your choices down on some ordering pad. You are then required to buzz a ‘odd’ bell for the waiter to come back over. Very bizarre. Putting that aside however, the food was amazing and cheap.

I had the most popular dish on the menu, the Roti Canai Chicken curry with traditional Hainan bread (pictured). The meat was succulent and the sauces were some of the best I’ve had. Spicy, aromatic and complimentary. The Hainan bread had a sweet taste to it and melted in the mouth. No method to this dish, just dip the bread in the mix and with your hands create your own flavour combos.

All this with a coke for under $16.

Complimentary probably…

And how is “$16” considered cheap? Keep it $10 or less…

Back in my day for $16 you’d get a whole roast bullock with gravy and a side of chips…

$16 is cheap unless you are buying the pre-made bain-marie lunch special at the local curry house or an un-happy meal. Any freshly cooked meal for under $20 is cheap these days.

You need to get out more. Seriously, $16 is not cheap. It isn’t expensive but it is certainly not cheap. There are plenty of places where you get a freshly cooked meal that is a lot less than $16. You have fallen victim to consumer conditioning.

I get out quite a bit, which is why I know that $16 including a coke is cheap. $16 might appear expensive if your dining experience is limited to a Westfield food court.

With most mid-range mains at the $20-30 mark, Paparich comes in at the cheaper end of the market.

$16 for stew, a piece of bread and a softdrink is not what I call cheap.

Was that “complimentary” or “complementary”? I can’t tell from the context …

Given its cheap eats, I’m guessing the former

FYI that’s a roti pictured. Hainan bread looks like this.

The ordering system works for me – the numbering of each item in the expansive menu and the fact that they confirm the order in the printed docket makes it difficult to end up with the wrong item.

Theres nothing ridiculous about the ordering system, its just different to what you know. Its the same in their establishments in KL. Theres no faffing about with a waiter standing around when a table who have said they’re read to order begin umming and ahh-ing over what to have.

The food is good and cheap, and service is quick. However, they don’t take bookings and it fills very quickly.
