Canberra Potters is excited to present Fired Up 2021: a festival celebrating Canberra’s ceramics community. The last twelve months have brought life-changing challenges as we have come to terms with natural disasters and a global pandemic. This has transformed how artists work and interpret their experiences. Throughout this year we have seen the power of ceramics to help build resilience and promote the health and wellbeing of our community. The Canberra Potters community have harnessed innovation to transform the way we connect and work as individuals and as a group.
Altering the simple, earthly material that is our primary medium into diverse and vibrant art provides an opportunity to come together, to understand and process the experiences of the last year and celebrate our achievements as artists and as a community. Fired Up 2021 will exhibit a rich and diverse event with multiple facets for audience engagement. Visitors will have the opportunity to engage in pre-booked, CovidSAFE user experiences such as our ever popular “Have a Go, Have a Throw” event where visitors get to try making objects on the pottery wheel, or through our “Raku Firing” where visitors are able to glaze pre-made ceramic sculptures and watch them get fired in the raku kilns right in front of them! Bookings coming soon.
Our resident artists will throw open their studios and welcome visitors into the makers world and offer opportunity to purchase original artwork directly from the maker. In addition our Pop-Up Mini Market Market and retail shop will be offering an array of ceramic wares, jewellery and decorative items created by some of the region’s best known ceramic artists. Food and drinks will be available to purchase from selected vendors, with visitors invited to buy handmade bowls by Canberra Potters members and students, and have them filled with delicious warming home made soup for free. Musicians and entertainers such as fire twirlers will add to an atmosphere of cosy conviviality as our artists share their enthusiasm of the ceramic art form among the community.
