We have less than a month until Santa Claus makes his yearly trip to the capital, bringing with him a whole lot of magic … But there’s also plenty to be found in one historic market.

The upcoming December Hartley Hall Markets are set to be the biggest of the year, with passionate stallholders selling an array of homegrown, homemade and handcrafted goods.

The Hartley Hall Markets had a humble start back in 1987, with a little over 30 stalls and an entry fee of 20 cents.

Today, the market is one of the largest of its kind in the country, with almost 200 stalls, some of which are still run by their original owners.

Organised by disability service organisation Hartley Lifecare, the markets have a rural theme and are held at the picturesque Hall Village Showground 10 km north of Canberra every month except January.

It’s the perfect opportunity for those still short on a few gifts. Load up on stocking stuffers, splash out on a statement gift, or perhaps put together your own hamper filled with the freshest local produce, baked goods, sauces, jams, pickles, relishes and chutneys, wine and spirits, plants, candles, soaps and creams, clothing, jewellery, ceramics and more.

The December market brings a few additions to the usual stalls, including expert leather, wood and metal workings, hand-painted denim jackets, crocheted goods, handmade cards, kids’ toys, traditional basketry … Even Lego minifigures matched to depict anyone you ask for!

Hartley Lifecare CEO Eric Thauvette says popping out to the dog-friendly market once a month has become a cherished part of his routine.

“There’s nothing better than a leisurely stroll through the incredible range of stalls, topped off with a steak sandwich from the Hartley BBQ and a good coffee,” he says.

“The country-style atmosphere is so welcoming, and it’s great to see families and their dogs enjoying the day. Our own dog loves the outing, especially when it includes a sausage!

“There’s always something unique to discover, from handmade and homegrown goods to hidden gems like the firepit I purchased a few years ago, which is now a favourite feature at home.”

Another wonderful aspect of the Hartley Hall Markets is the opportunity they bring to give back to the Canberra community. Entry is by gold coin donation, which goes towards supporting Hartley Lifecare’s disability programs and services in the region.

“It’s a small gesture that makes a big impact,” Eric says.

“I invite everyone to come and spend time outdoors in the picturesque setting of Hall, bring the kids for a mini steam train ride, and enjoy an extra special family day out this December.”

The next Hartley Hall Markets is open from 9 am this Sunday, 1 December, at Hall Village Showground. With ample free parking, a massive stall range, plenty of entertainment and live music to enjoy, it’s set to be a day filled with wonder.
