According to the 2016 ABS study into Education and Work in Australia, 41% of people in the ACT have a Bachelor degree or above, making Canberrans the most educated people in the country.
And while many have put their qualifications to good use, or followed the career dream that saw them apply to university in the first place, there’s often a sense that going that little bit further could have opened more doors, or guaranteed more money.
In a city where specialised roles are in high demand and offer valuable rewards, it’s worthwhile to find ways to stand apart from the rest – especially when you’re competing against such a high percentage of qualified candidates.
One definite way to get attention is with a postgraduate qualification.
Just 8.3% of Australians have a postgraduate qualification*, making it a revered addition to your CV. If the next job you apply for values qualifications above all else, you’re certain to make a stronger impression than the degree-qualified candidate standing next to you.
There’s no shortage of postgraduate study options that allow you to claim postgraduate status, and some take as little as one semester to complete.
You can choose something that strengthens your current qualifications and experience, or go in a completely different direction. For example, you can do a postgraduate master degree in a field completely unrelated to your first degree (it often just takes a little longer to complete).
Graduate certificates and diplomas are available for just about any field of study, or you may decide to fulfil a lifelong dream of being able to place Dr. in front of your name!
If the idea of stepping into a new world of study and obtaining a prized qualification intrigues you, head to the ANU Postgraduate Information Evening.
You’ll get the opportunity to speak to a wide range of academics and ANU staff from all the academic colleges, and discover what postgraduate study could do for you and how it aligns with your goals, aspirations, and current commitments.
There’s everything from public policy to music, arts, digital arts, history, design, social research, translation, medicine, visual arts, and much more. You can even create your own program of study with Graduate Studies Select, which allows you to choose from a broad range of courses and combine them into a unique study program.
And if you hadn’t heard last year, ANU graduates were rated the most employable graduates in Australia, and among the most sought-after worldwide. ANU has been rated Australia’s top university for getting a job four years in a row, according to the Global Employability University Ranking by Times Higher Education.
It’s never too late, or too early, to begin. Even Michelangelo said at age 87: “I am still learning”!
The ANU Postgraduate Information Evening takes place on Monday 15th May from 5-7pm at 188 Fellows Lane, Acton (in the Australian Centre on China in the World Auditorium).
