Chief Minister Gallagher has announced she’s off the China to shill for students to come to ANU and UC:

The ACT Chief Minister, Katy Gallagher, has today announced that she will lead a delegation to China in the first week of September on an education mission – with the Australian National University and the University of Canberra Vice-Chancellors, and to promote the Government’s commitment to Study Canberra.

The trip includes visits to major universities in Shanghai and Beijing, meetings with education recruitmentagents on the ground and with alumni networks in both cities.

“The China mission will provide my first opportunity as ACT Chief Minister and the Minister for Higher Education to demonstrate our city’s strong commitment to growing our international student market, promoting the benefits of studying and living in Canberra, and to strengthening our city’s relationship with Beijing,” the Chief Minister said.

This has prompted her to release the ACT’s response to the Federales Asian Century white paper.

A sadder globbing together of bullet points you will rarely see.

Yeah man, creatives.

Talk about a lose-lose trip for the ACT.

If Katy succeeds she will be pushing up demand for rental accommodation in and around the ACT, thus pushing up peoples rents, thus making it harder for people already living here to afford housing, while simultaneously making it harder for us to spend our money in our local economy (because it’s all going to pay off the banks for the landlords mortgage).

If Katy fails she is spending our tax dollars on a junket instead of on local services.

Either way she’s not helping the people that vote for her.

So who’s paying for the trip… UC, ANU, or the poor taxpayers of the ACT?
I feel they should be more worried about trying to encourage Canberra students to go the the universities. The make up of existing international students compared to Canberra students would be interesting to see.

She is not exactly going to need to work that hard, I was over there a few weeks back and everywhere are posters for uni’s in Australia with both the ANU and UC been predominantly displayed among places like UNSW and the general feeling among locals seemed to be if you got into uni in Australia you had made it.

It’s sometime however not desire, just lack of money that stops potential students from coming over here with in some cases the local daily wage over there wouldn’t even cover food over here, let alone any of the other necessities for life.

While Katy’s there, she might like to recruit some competent technocrats – we’ve got the totalitarian government powers, all we need is some people who can use them to make worthwhile things happen on time, and on budget.

I was China bound once, a dose of fig syrup shifted it.

Talk about unashamedly milking the Chinese for every last drop she can get out of ’em..
