The former Sirius Building in Phillip, which was renamed after public servants working there complained about its colonial connection, is on the market.

Purpose-built in 2010 for the Department of Health and Aged Care, which will call it home until at least 2035, the building is now known as Yaradhang, the Ngunnawal term for eucalyptus, a plant known for its medicinal properties.

It was originally named after the flagship of the First Fleet, and its design referenced that of the 18th-century sailing ship.

About 4000 public servants work in the building, which has had $68 million spent on it since 2019, including a new fitout.

Located at 23 Furzer Street, it sits on a 10,410 square metre site in the heart of the Woden Town Centre. It provides office accommodation across 10 ‘campus-style’ levels with onsite car parking provided in two basement levels.

The building boasts a 6-Star NABERS Energy Rating, one of only five in the ACT, and has also achieved a 6-Star NABERS Water Rating and won multiple national sustainability awards.

The property exceeds the requirements for the Commonwealth’s Net Zero Government Operation Strategy.

Matthew Winter, head of Capital Markets & Investment Services, ACT, at Colliers, said the landmark asset was expected to attract interest from national and international investors. Its most recent valuation was about $345 million.

Mr Winter said the A-grade building offered about $25 million net passing income with annual 3.25 per cent fixed rental increases, and the fit-out represented a future-proofed investment.

He said the Department recently extended its lease by 10 years.

The name controversy stirred strong responses from the architect and former Prime Minister John Howard.

Mr Russell, from May and Russell Architects, said he was disappointed at the Health staff for taking offence.

“We cannot deny our history,” he said.

Mr Howard was more blunt, saying it was pointless petulance.

Colliers and JLL are handling the sale via an international expression of interest process.

Leading development and management property group Mirvac is the vendor.

Why just the building? When do we get hit with street name reform and suburb name reform?

How many buildings in this country before the First Fleet arrived? Just asking for a friend

More woke madness. If it weren’t for the first fleet those public servants wouldn’t be here to enjoy all the privileges this great country has given them. Which they now seem to take for greater. 70% of the workers in the building voted ‘no’ to a name change, yet they still went ahead and changed the name. Just typical of the left-wing elites riding rough shot over the will of the majority.

The ugliest building in Canberra is also in Phillip, in fact a lot of the new apartment buildings are pretty ugly in Phillip, those two news ones on Melrose drive look tired and its only just been built.
But the ugliest of all is easily that white box with some yellow paint on it, on the corner of Callam and Hindmarsh. The architect and the town planner who approved it should be locked up.
Riotact should run a poll for Canberras ugliest buildings.

I always forget? are we against immigration or for it?

BAD
Overseas migration 1788-1789 – net annual gain of 1,373 people.
GOOD?
Overseas migration 2022-23 – net annual gain of 518,000 people

Australia’s colonial past is soooo horrible, so bad that the lefty petals who ‘worked'(?) in the building, inherritors and BENEFICIARIES of said past , just couldn’t stand the shame of its name. Poor poor petals.

Oh dear Bob9000. Slow down before you tar everyone with the same brush.
A select few decided to run roughshod over the majority.
Unfortunately if you stand up, you get called a racist.
But.. welcome to what Canberra has become.
A once beautiful town, now run by weasels, who think anyone who doesn’t share their revisionist views must be censored.

Normally I enjoy a good bit of PS bashing. But in this instance the “staff” were consulted if they wanted a new name, 70% said no.
The next email was a list of ‘names’ to pick from.. Sirius wasn’t included.
Funnily enough, the majority of people didn’t bother responding.. but the execs still claimed “an overwhelming majority” of people chose the name.
Yup.. majority of those that bothered to respond to a foregone conclusion, against the actual staff wishes.
All the buildings in the area, “were’ named after the 1st fleet. Scarborough, Alexander, Albermarle remain. (My favourite was Supply.. the old canteen).
How about we acknowledge and show respect to ALL, not a select few.
So bash the PS.. but know the facts first.

Many of the roads too.
