So you want to get out and celebrate Melbourne Cup but haven’t booked anything?
Fear not. Some of the best Cup day experiences I’ve had were last minute scrambles from the office to the nearest pub or club in time for one drink while the race is on. Plenty of casual drinking holes will be showing the race on the big screen and serving sparkling and snacks to all comers.
If you’re after something a little more formal, we’ve made some calls and found a couple of options. The Hotel Realm is running two functions this year, but both are booked out so you’ll need to get in early next year to get a place.
THE HYATT HOTEL CANBERRA
While the Hyatt’s Garden and Tea Lounge functions are booked out, you can still score a table of ten for the more formal sit-down lunch in the Ballroom. The Chandon will flow freely as you and your colleagues or friends enjoy a three-course menu, a fashion show featuring local designers, a live DJ and watching the race on the big screen.
Cost: $1250 for a table of ten
Bookings: 6269 8898
JOE’S BAR AT EAST HOTEL
Joe’s Bar at East Hotel in Kingston is serving up a 5-course Italian Long Lunch with a four-hour drinks package. There will be live entertainment all afternoon and prizes for the best dressed.
Cost: $175 per person for a table of ten; $185 for individual bookings; $110 for lunch and a glass of sparkling on arrival only.
Bookings: 6178 0050.
It’s too late to book a function at Canberra’s racecourse as all the corporate hospitality options are sold out, but if you’re happy to hang out in the public area or lucky enough to be a member or guest of a member, you can still head out to the track tomorrow for some real horse-racing, frocks and atmosphere. The first local race is at 1pm.
Time: From 9.30am. The last bus back to the city leaves at 7.30pm for the stayers.
Cost: $25 for adults; $15 for children aged 12 to 17; $5 for pensioners; $50 plus entrance cost to enter the Members enclosure as one of two guests of a member.
Bookings: 6204 0000.
