Local designer adds new dimension to Canberra’s fashion scene

milly_molly_mandy 29 July 2009 24

Local Canberra designer Polly Stokes will soon be launching her exclusive fashion label Polbymade.  Polly’s label brings together over ten years experience in design with distinctive fabrics to create one-of-a-kind garments for wedding, formal and everyday wear.

Polly’s signature is the innovative use of traditional Japanese fabrics in contemporary designs.  After graduating with a Bachelor of Fashion Design from CIT in 2005, Polly lived in Japan for 18 months, immersing herself in the culture and expanding her knowledge of traditional and modern Japanese fashion.

Her extensive work with vintage Japanese textiles has led her to the exclusive use of high quality natural fabrics including silk, cotton and wool.

“After a number of years in the Canberra fashion industry, I am thrilled to be formally launching my new label and website,” says Polly, Polbymade’s creator and designer.  “I love sharing my passion for fabrics and design, especially Japanese materials and aesthetics, and with such a diverse design scene, Canberra is a unique and exciting place to work”.

To mark the launch of Polbymade, selected works will be on display at The Front Gallery and Café at Lyneham Shops will be open to the public from Wednesday 15 to Tuesday 20 July.

An official launch celebration will be held at The Front Gallery and Cafe on Thursday 16 July at 6.30pm.

Polbymade can also be seen at the Handmade Market, held quarterly at Albert Hall. “Handmade is very excited to be featuring the very clever Polly from Polbymade as part of our new Fashion Ally this September” says Handmade Market creative director Julie Nichols.

More information on Polbymade is available at www.polbymade.com.au.

People speculating on what gender a person is, really should be identifying what gender THEY are, shouldn’t they?

I’m XX!

I wouldn’t necessarily assume ant is a girl from post #4. Could be the dude in the photo.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve never heard any male reminisce about the days when they could fit into a size 8.

I just came back to say that I must say I did like the dress however (hadn’t even noticed what the guy was wearing until it was pointed out it was bad).

But yep totally agree my 3 girls got mistaken for boys lots and we had nothing against pink.

And I may still be waylaid who knows lol

Sorry for the derail.

I love the dress.

It’s hard to break away from falling prey to thinking of the ‘default’ gender being male though. I’d be willing to bet that most people would assume that other posters are male (unless explicitly labelled otherwise). I must admit that I do it.

The same thing happens with babies: unless a baby is dressed in pink, everyone will assume it’s a boy.

Sorry just a few big girls blouses sometimes though. Yeah it certainly highlghts you should just imagine people to be sexless and think accordingly. I’m not great at the thinking accordingly bit but I will keep apologising for it when I’m out-of-line.

Come on. Be serious. I’m no Bruno, but I know what looks stupid.

Good luck with the designs, I hope you do well! Not my style though.

I’h with you Hugh. The top makes him look like he’s trying to dress like some sort of super-villan intent on taking over the world and the pant just make him look lie a tool.
