Massimo Di Maio, a franchising law expert, brings a wealth of experience to Meyer Vandenberg’s commercial law team where he has recently joined as special counsel.

He has worked on many substantial matters including developing the Australian franchise for US Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) gyms, negotiating a major private equity acquisition of 35 franchised businesses, and sharing his legal expertise with national and international clients including Hungry Jack’s, Westpac, Yamaha and Century 21.

Hailing from Rome, Massimo has both Italian and Australian law degrees from Sapienza University of Rome and University of Sydney, respectively.

Massimo previously lived in Sydney and Melbourne before joining the team at Meyer Vandenberg’s corporate and commercial practice in Canberra in October 2020.

“It has been an extremely positive experience since day one and I am thrilled to be a part of Meyer Vandenberg’s growing team in Canberra, which comprises a group of talented and genuine people,” he says. “I look forward to contributing to the success of the firm.”

Massimo sees huge potential in the Canberra market and looks forward to servicing the diversified portfolio of clients the practice has.

“We have a number of national and international clients ranging from startups to large corporations,” he says. “Our team is well placed to provide substantial value to our clients and drive growth for our commercial practice.

“While several industries have been negatively affected due to COVID-19, the pandemic has offered amazing opportunities for others. The federal and state governments have introduced many pieces of legislation in the wake of COVID-19, including how to deal with difficulties and hardships faced by tenants. Our team has been across all such legislation and continues to share its expertise with our clients.

“Despite the pandemic, we have noticed a surge in commercial transactions that kept us busy during these unprecedented times. Thanks to its firm stance on COVID-19, Australia’s economy has remained more buoyant than other parts of the world.”

Meyer Vandenberg’s chair, Archie Tsirimokos, is equally positive about the future of the commercial sector in Canberra, and sees Massimo’s skillset as an invaluable addition.

“I have always said that Canberra has the potential to become the place to be in Australia,” says Archie. “The fact we’re attracting bright minds from much further afield is testament to this. And now with the additional skills and experience that Massimo brings, I feel Meyer Vandenberg is entering a whole new league.”

Meyer Vandenberg is one of the largest independent legal firms in Canberra, offering a vast range of services including acquisitions, corporate restructure, debt recovery and all dispute matters. It is the trusted adviser to a huge range of clients from some of Canberra’s biggest and most iconic businesses to startups looking to raise capital.
