Mawson Bike Cage

Has anyone managed to gain entry to the flash Mawson bike cage, which was completed around February this year? It was part of the $550k upgrade to the Park and Ride facility announced by Simon Corbell in November 2011, but to date there has only ever been one lonely bike in the cage, put there when the gate was vandalised and left open in April. Since then the gate has been repaired and re-locked, and no one has used it (based on my twice daily observations).

I’ve called Canberra Connect and emailed MyWay (who have nominal control) several times, and they’ve been both very sympathetic and completely useless. There are no signs on the cage indicating how to get access, which would be a helpful addition to a multi-thousand dollar installation.

Does anyone have any clue how to get access to this white elephant? Does it have anything to do with the govt being in caretaker mode?

3. Pester them every week for three or four weeks, don’t let up until they give in and tell you to go test it.

Ok, I know you’ve all been on the edges of your keyboards waiting for my report, so here it is: I got the damn access to the damn cage, finally.

Here’s the unofficial guide to getting access to the bike cages:
1. Get a MyWay card
2. Send the serial number and your name to myway@act.gov.au
3. Pester them every week for three or four weeks, don’t let up until they give in and tell you to go test it.
4. Profit?

… would be good if all cycleways and bike paths were sheltered!

I like your moxie, young man, have you considered a position with Transport ACT?

Anyway, by coincidence I just received a response to one of my emails to My Way, who promised again that access (via My Way card) will be granted by tomorrow. I’ll report back.

Canberrans are generally lazy preferring to drive the 2 – 3 Km to park a car than ride a bike. Is it any wonder why we are getting fatter!

But I am scared of magpies and don’t want to risk the 2-3km ride, would be good if all cycleways and bike paths were sheltered!

The Bike Cages are park of the park n ride- bike n ride initiative in Transport for Canberra. The Bike cages initially all had separate swipe cards for each cage(ridiculous) then it was to change to recognize the My Way cards but you still had to nominate which bike cage you are using.

The Mawson park n ride – bike n ride in total has cost $1.3million with the majority of funding for the surface carparks which coincidentally cost around $7000 per carpark! Whether or not co location of bike n ride and park n ride works is probably evident given the issue with access to the bike cage, but Canberrans are generally lazy preferring to drive the 2 – 3 Km to park a car than ride a bike. Is it any wonder why we are getting fatter!

What is needed is a change in attitude to active travel and combing riding a bike and bus travel which is very easy, and reduce our reliance on the car.

All well and good, but it doesn’t answer his simple question.

Sounds like what is needed is a system that works before you blame people for not using it.
