Many Canberrans like to keep an eye on their escape routes.

They’ll be pleased to read a story from the ABC on another $10 million from the NSW Government to improve the Kings Highway around Bungendore.

“The Labor Member for the NSW seat of Monaro, Steve Whan, says the road work will make a big difference to motorists.

“There’s over $33 million being spent on the section of the highway from the edge of Queanbeyan across to the Defence (HQ) roundabout,” he said.

“What people will see is some additional overtaking lanes, widening of roads and and better corners for people to use.”

Jeez it took me heaps of clicks to re-find this story.

Win news just had a piece on the residents of Kings Way who are understandably upset at having a major road suddenly cutting straight through their area. I must say, I’m a bit puzzled by it, they could keep the old curve and just make it a smidge wider.

As Aurelius says, the road is fine. But we have people who now demand that any road that is not dead straight and dual carriageway is “dangerous”. It aint’ the road that’s dangerous!

As for the Turpentine Road, it’s a major project. It will make the route from Tarago, through Nerriga, to Nowra a tarred work of art. I’m not sure about the bit from Braidy to Nerriga, that might still be awful. But the Tarago route is going to be great.

If you do a search, you’ll find some updates on the RTA and Shoalhaven council sites.

Has anyone driven the new sealed road between Braidwood and Jervis Bay? Apparently an mountain of money hads been thrown at it via the local MP – Joanna Gash – and it has cut the time to get there from Canb by 40 mins…..

Don’t tell everyone about that road!!!

Now people are going to use it and won’t be a clear run anymore!!!

Oh, you what?! Is that finished? Turpentine Road?

Man, I pulled onto that at about 11am on the Monday of the long weekend (at the Jervis Bay end) and there was a big yellow sign warning of all sorts of dire consequences for 2WDs if they ventured past that point (‘Ere Be Dragons) in the wet for 60kms of unsealed road, and there was the mother of all storms on the way.

So I did a U-turn and took a much longer and more painful route (watch the spelling there) via a dozen little burghs, Batemans and the Clyde. And the aforementioned parade of boats and carvans.

Bah!

I drive the road between Canberra and Cooma all the time tylers, and I’m not aware there’s a problem with it… most of the accidents along there seem to be caused by people spending the weekend skiing and then falling asleep on the way home.

I love that corner coming out of Queanbeyan – superb on a bike!

How bout’ upgrading the roads between Canberra and Cooma for christ’s sake? What’s it gonna take to do something about it…the death of a footballer on the route?

I drive the Kings Highway every day. The road itself is fine.
The problems come from the retarded idiots who think the speed limit doesn’t apply to them, or who spend the whole trip aching to be one car-space further up the chain of traffic.
I am appalled/amazed/baffled by the stupidity of people on that road whenever it gets a little crowded. If I had a gun licence, I’d sit on my verandah all weekend, taking pot shots at them, just to help Darwinism along a little.

On my bike or in my car….I love the coast road….I just avoid the long weekend/holiday periods where everyone is towing their boat or caravan for the once a year sojourn

Touche (sans the little acutey thing on the e because my laptop doesn’t have that shortcut).

Pardonnez-moi; I was just being a little Defense-ive. (Or Defence-ive.)

I’ll be happy with a four lane megahighway with tunnels through the mountains and 160kph speed limits from canberra to batemans bay

Nothing less is acceptable. You know it makes sense.

Four lanes only is a bit conservative. Six would be nice especially on the downhill run after you’ve topped the Clyde.

And the shiny utes that looked like they’re polished daily and mimic the sound of an Airbus taking off are already observing the 160kmh limit in anticipation.

I am still wondering why we needed a roundabout near the Defense HQ in the first place. Is there enough traffic there at any one time to justify its existence?

Meanwhile, will the new road upgrade between Bungendore and Qbyn include funding for new teddy bears? The current ones are looking a little worn…

La ronde point pret de La Defense? Je ne sais pas, mais c’est vrai — c’est un grand ‘pain dans le derriere’.

Espeically heading coast-wards and Nanna or Uncle Reg gets totally spooked by the concept and slows to about 60km/h.

Hey Loq, does Aurelius still want a lamb?

Seriously. email me 😉

Thumper – we got some!

I’m glad this guys isn’t a speechwriter, because something about this sentence worries me. I think it is the concept of using a corner. One Nation on Wheels, aka the Motorists Party wouldn’t make this mistake…..

When HQ JOC opens for business, there will be traffic trouble. There’s going to be 600-odd people coming to work teh main shift (it’s 24 hours a day, but the main shift is teh daytime one), and there’s no public transport. And most of them will be living in Gunghalin. and they’ll all be coming and going around the same time.

Most peopel figure they will use the Sutton Road as Majura Road is already a debacle. Some might even use Macs Reef Rd if Sutton crumbles under the pressure.

They are going to put in a roundabout at Captain’s Flat Rd intersection with the King’s Hwy, but not until next year. That’s going to be ugly until then, as Captain’s Flat Rd is busy most of the time, but very much so at morning rush hour, when it meets the swarms coming in from Bung and surrounds. And of an evening, people trying to turn across and in, meeting the Defence people roaring home.

There’s a very dramatic change planned for the big curve as you come up out of Qbn on the King’s Hwy. That whole bend will be excised, they are going to run a road straight up, from just after the end of the 60 zone, up through that little subdivision (King’s Way?). But again, not til next year.

I think we’ll see some smashes for sure, caused by the extra volume.

You’re right mr grumpy. They would take flex to make sure that they were ‘home’ long before 4:51pm.

wouldn`t want a traffic snarl there at 4.51 friday of a long weekend…..hang on, what self-respecting ps would still be there?

What a croc.

The Fed Gov should pay for the entire Kings upgrade from Canberra to the Coast.

The amount of money transferred between the two areas is a major market.

It has been too long to decide who is responsible and the end of the duck shoving needs to stop now.

Who else is a friend of a victim of the coastal roads??????

.

Well if it is anything like Amberley Air Force base I distinctly remember (from many years ago now) major traffic snarls around 5:01pm each weekday!

firstly I am staggered that the previous commonwealth government got away with building that HQ in the middle of nowhere and then secondly that it did so without improving the roads, except for a section within about 500m of the roundabout.
Pork barreling at its very worst.

Who gives a F*%K about the blackspots between Bungendore & Braidwood?

Good point. Although there are some serious-looking roadworks going on about 5-10km before you get to Braidwood as we speak – not sure what the plans are.

L

So, $33mil to upgrade between Qbn and the new defence HQ !
That should make the trip to work smoother.
It is soooo annoying when potholes spill the coffee.
