Motorini - a review

I recently changed from a 4 wheel ride to a 2 wheeled one, by obtaining a Vespa PX200, and thus encountered Motorini in Phillip, and the proprietor, Nico.

To be absolutely fair, I am not aware of any other venues in Canberra where you can get a vespa motorbike serviced, nor have I bothered to look.

I have found Nico to be extremely friendly, and the after sales support has been absolutely exceptional. This is one of the rare people that care more about the product than making sales, infact I am strongly of the opinion that he runs the shop as a non-profit entity, just to be around vespas.

Nico stocks a great deal more than vespas, having a range of Italian models such as aprilia and piaggio (even though vespas are a piaggio model, they rate their own branding) – if you are seriously passionate about obtaining a temporary Australian certificate, I’ve seen there’s also Ducati’s at the next door shop. You’ll also get the full range of motorbike gear from there, and if you need a tune up, or a rare part, he’ll go out of his way to obtain it for you.

Nico will also help you with getting through your P plate exam – which I have also done, and found extremely informative.

Since outside my Department building the amount of vespas parking outside in the free motorbike park has doubled in the past month, I’m sure everybody else will have noted the amount of motorbikes hitting the road has increased proportionally with the price of fuel as well.

Do it in style, vespa’s are a classic bike, as well as cheaper than chips to run.

Motorini are in Phillip, at 2/6 Bellona Court (off Townshend street) If you are interested in getting into the motorbike scene, I’d recommend Nico to anybody.

around town the 125 -150 cc scooters should get no more than 3litres/100km. Open road running pushes it out towards 4 litres/100km.

That’s quite good. My gas-gulping 4wd gets around 7 litres per hundred kms, but I can drive. I’m often surprised by the results of motorbikes, which are only slightly better than my car, or the same, or even worse. My car is a 1.6 carburettored, so youd’d think that a tiny little motorbike would be doing a bit better.

I’ve known Nico for a while i got a Daelim 125cc off him years ago he is pretty cool

v_man_returns, take a trip out to Motorini and have a yarn to Nico. He’ll likely know of anyone looking to sell their scoot. Also try EBay – scooter mechanics seem to be honorable folks so even if you are shipping from interstate you can probably get a service history before hitting the ‘bid’ button.

I have an ET150 m’self (thanks Nico) but not looking to sell!

Thanks Mælinar, I think you’re right about the GTS. Plus don’t think I’d look too manly on the pink one!

Servicing costs barely rate on the wallet scale. In some instances, I have offered to pay for bits and pieces, and have been brushed off with a flick of the hand.

Nico has a plate next to his coffee machine (hey he’s Italian) for loose change…

Yeah, they’re nothing like V8 Commodores there Berlina!! :-p

What are the servicing costs like? Must be cheaper than a car, surely (especially 2 stroke models).

I like the idea, but wouldn’t buy one because they don’t suit me as a mode of transport (need to carry kids, stuff, towing, etc)…

Here is a pink one – although the GTS also pictured looks a better deal.

Any vespa riders reading this looking to sell theirs? I’ve been looking for a good ET150 for a while now, want to get rid of the car and start scooting.

Vespas just reek of cool, simple as that.

Other scooters just look like a poor man’s moto, and ride accordingly.

Being non-mathematical, I have no idea how much fuel my car, or my vespa consumes.

My car needed a $60 fill twice a month
My vespa needs a $8 fill 3 times in 2 weeks (but I’ll add another fill for comparison purposes)

So in comparison, driving the same route, my car costed $120/month, and my vespa costs $72/month (even adding an extra tank fill just to be safe)

Hope the math works itself out – since I can’t count I just track the actual money changing hands bit.

What fuel consumption do modern small scooters (eg 150-200cc) actually get, in litres per hundred km? I used to own a very small car that got less than 6l/100km in town – how do scooters compare?

yeh yeh yeh…. but can you drive to the bay on a vespa or duck out to tumut for a steak on saturday?

Vespa’s are only good for city riding – I wouldn’t set seat on a vespa if you live out of town because honestly; if you can’t keep up with the traffic on two wheels you have a big tick on your head for the next accident – specially if you live south and commute on the parkway.
So taking that into account why wouldn’t you wear as much safety gear as you could while riding a vespa or other 2 wheeled motor user- “you don’t have to wear fancy dress to ride them”.

You don’t have to wear fancy dress to ride a motorbike either – it’s just the attitude of the rider. You know you wont cause an accident cause you’re a good rider but 90% of the time it is not the rider at fault – so its always best to suit up to protect yourself from what possibly could happen; cause the day you dont wear those leather gloves is the day that a driver doesnt see you stopped at the red light, you fall off, hands go down first and boom – you lost your hands.

I suit up as much as I can for any ride to protect myself from not just the elements but a possible threat/risk. Every two wheeled motor user should adopt that attitude even if your on a 200cc.

I’ve ridden to Mt Gambier on a modified 1991 PX200 as well as Dubbo, Snowy Mountains, Sydney on a ’63 Lambretta and various other places far and wide on scooters over the last 20 years.

What I enjoy about scootering is pushing bikes that are designed for urban living to their limits. Vespa famously competed in the Paris to Daker rally back in 1981? with the then new P range model (pretty much the same as the px) with five bikes, with at least two, maybe three actually finishing.

As for safety gear – wear it. Hitting the pavement at 60 still hurts. I’ve got the scars to prove it.

Thumper, Axles in Phillip is the best in town but very hard to get into quickly, you might try Bruces Motorcycle Repairs at Mitchell, just had a major service on my VTR 1000 and am quite happy with the work and price. If the city suits you better, I am sure that Hal at TJ’s can help you with the clutch. I wouldn’t let Joes pump up the tyres on my sons pushbike nor will I put up with the arrogance of the spannermen from the big shop in Fyshwick that took over Action in Mitchell. As for the Vespa’s, you can keep em. The wheels are too small to be truely stable at a reasonable speed in corners and they won’t get you out of trouble if you need to give it a squirt. Oh and Nico is excellent. He sold my then 63 year old mum a Vespa a couple of years ago and his service was terrific. It’s a pity that she crashed it less than a K from his shop because a tool in a car wouldn’t give her space on the road.

Always good to hear about a mechanic not just in it for the $. I take my ZZR-1100 to East Coast BM’s (aka Mick Owen). Great bloke, nice staff, happy to show you how to do minor stuff yourself.

Keep the attitude that the tin tops are out to kill you and you’ve got a great start! Hope you stick with it during the coming months, be warned, minus five isn’t a lot of fun at a hundred KPH 🙁

Mælinar I too have just purchased a (black) PX200 to replace my 1987 model from Motorini and concur with your comments. Nico is a real gem. I look forward to seeing you out and about

Why is that without ever meeting you, I can imagine you on a vespa…

When I move back into town, I’m going to get me a tuk-tuk for sure. I love the look of them, you don’t have to wear fancy dress to ride them, and they’re kind-of civilised. Nice to hear of this Nico guy too, it’s so rare nowadays to run into an enthusiast in business.

I don’t ride a Vespa, but I do ride a scooter that does not cost the same price as a decent 2nd hand car, unlike the vespa. I got a bug agility, from Moto Central in Mitchell (http://www.motocentralscooters.com.au/) – Don the owner is great I have had mine for a year ( just paid the $200 for my YEARLY rego) and love the fact that my fuel price is 6 bucks a week.

I paid $4000, included helmet, jacket, gloves, rego, bike and change to pay for the L plate course.

Today there was a tiny little article in the Daily Tele about a police chase here in Canberra. Police versus couple on a Vespa. Couple on Vespa fall off. Vespa pilot blew over the limit. Vespa trying to outrun the police … hilarious …

So tempted to get one…
