Multicultural Eats: Where to eat on Lunar New Year in Canberra

Lunar New Year 2021 will soon be upon us, heralding in the Year of the Ox. The holiday is all about luck, health and reuniting with family.

The cornerstone of the 15-day celebration, which starts this year on the 12th of February, is a grand feast featuring symbolic dishes including dumplings, noodles, seafood and desserts. Region Media has rounded up four tasty options to kick off the Year of the Ox in Canberra.

Canberra Labor Club Belconnen

Bring the whole family to the Canberra Labor Club Belconnen and enjoy performances from the Prosperous Mountain Lion Dancers as they bless the club over the first three nights of the Lunar New Year. The performances will take place at 6.30 pm nightly from 12 to 14 February.

After Friday’s performance, stay on for dinner at Selections Bistro where a one-night-only New Year inspired three-course set menu is on offer for $48 per person. It features Mixed Seafood San Choy Bau, Peking Duck Bao, Crispy Skin Spatchcock in Special Sauce, Golden Yolk Fried King Prawn, and Sticky Coconut Balls. Natural Nine

Located inside Casino Canberra, the colourful, stylish interior of Natural Nine will be the indulgent backdrop to an adult-only celebration on Friday, 12 February. For $115 per person enjoy a generous 2-hour drinks package including tap beer, wine, spirits or soft drinks to accompany the grand 10-dish banquet.

Natural Nine’s signature Chinese cuisine with a modern Australian twist will be on full display throughout the night. Highlights include Fish Crackers with Apple Coriander Salsa and Fried Salted Red Bean Caramel ice cream. Tickets are available via their website.

Hellenic Club Woden

Lunar New Year celebrations meet Valentine’s Day at the Hellenic Club Woden. On Sunday, 14 February enjoy one of Canberra’s favourite Yum Cha destinations, Ginseng Hellenic, with a side of lion dancing.

Book in to get your fill of delicious piping hot dumplings for either the 11:30 am or 1:15 pm Yum Cha seating and show by calling 6260 8346. If you miss out on a spot, you can still watch the performance at 4:00 pm in the main foyer.

From 11 February to 27 February, XO will be welcoming the new year in style with a traditional Chinese New Year menu with a distinctive Australian summer twist. The $88 per head 8-course share menu includes indulgent Siu Mai with lobster and beluga caviar along with a colourful plate of Yee Sang with mixed vegetables, caramelised nuts, salmon and plum sauce.
