If you lived in Canberra in the 1990’s, you’ll probably remember the advertisement announcing that the Hyper-D was the place to be, but from today, the Tuggeranong Hyperdome will have a new look and a new name.

In a new era for Tuggeranong, the shopping centre in the south of Canberra has been renamed South.Point, with an official unveiling of the new brand on Thursday morning (10 May).

South.Point centre manager Jeremy Wilson said the Tuggeranong Hyperdome had grown up with the valley over the last 30 years but it was now time for a makeover.

“We are providing more than just a place to shop, and want to continue to be a friendly, inviting destination,” Mr Wilson said.

“South.Point will be a revitalised heartbeat for the ‘Nappy Valley’, which has now grown up into adulthood.”

Marketing Manager Adam Gill said the new brand and name was created to modernise with the changing market.

“The new name stands for the promise to the community and to our retailers that we will continue to adapt to every change in the market,” Mr Gill said.

“There is a new demographic in Tuggeranong and we wanted to create a brand that we can modernise ourselves with and match the changing market.

“When Tuggeranong was first built, it was a new area and it was a cheap area to live, so a lot of families buying their first home moved here.

“Since then, they have grown up and are now in their mid-50s and all these new younger professionals have moved here so we need to change and adapt to that market.”

Deputy Leader of the Opposition Nicole Lawder was at the launch and was excited about this new venture.

“There is no doubt that Tuggeranong has changed in the 30 years that I have lived here and the Hyperdome has been open, so I think that it is great to see that reflected in the renaming of the Hyperdome,” she said.

“Our demographic has changed and consumer activities have certainly changed, and so have our expectations, so it is exciting to see the revamp.”

Residents will also be able to see and experience tangible changes which include a new alfresco food precinct alongside the centre’s redeveloped Anketell Street front.

A new, centrally-located concierge has already been installed, as well as upgraded bathrooms, a parents room and entrances and fashionably furnished rest areas throughout the centre.

South.Point is hosting three days of events celebrating the rebrand and Mother’s Day, starting on Friday afternoon (11 May) with kids’ activities, and then a full list of events across Saturday and Sunday.

The demographic may have changed, but when I visit (admittedly only every few months), the busiest shops – certainly in terms of paying customers, not just browsers – seem to be those at the budget-conscious end of the scale. With the squeeze on many household budgets, it probably wouldn’t be smart to get too carried away with up-market aspirations for this centre.

At least it is permanent unlike some of the “pop-up” nonsense in other areas of our once great city.

Westfield, South Point. Hmmm, I see a pattern developing here…
