A man and a woman have been released on bail over the alleged burglary of $6000-worth of electronic items from Harvey Norman Belconnen.

The two Macquarie residents, 44-year-old Shay Michelle Beattie and 33-year-old Brett Anthony Kelly, were charged over the alleged incident when they faced the ACT Magistrates Court on Friday (12 January).

ACT Policing alleged the pair had gained access to the rear loading dock of the Belconnen Westfield store and had taken several boxes on 7 January 2024.

“CCTV footage showed two people loading the stolen items into a white Toyota Corolla and police enquiries linked the 33-year-old man and 44-year-old woman to the theft,” police alleged.

When the pair were arrested on Thursday (11 January), a search of the home they were in allegedly recovered the stolen items.

The search also allegedly found several registration plates and bank cards in the names of other people, which are also suspected to have been stolen.

Beattie and Kelly were both charged with aggravated burglary, joint commission theft and unlawful possession of stolen property when they appeared in court on Friday.

They applied for bail, which was not opposed by the prosecution on conditions.

When discussing Beattie’s case, Magistrate Robert Cook noted the alleged “serious nature of offending” and how she was already on a court order.

“To be frank, I would have opposed it and remanded you in custody,” he told her about her bail.

He granted bail for both. Beattie’s matter was adjourned to 1 February, while Kelly’s was adjourned to 5 February.
