Police are investigating an explosion in Rae Street, Belconnen, that last night destroyed a kebab shop, the supermarket next door and several other shops in the area, as well as shattering glass more than 100 metres away.
ACT Fire and Rescue were called to the Turkish Kebab and Pizza shop at around 7:30 pm last night after reports the building was alight.
More than five firefighting appliances were in attendance to extinguish the blaze. An aerial platform was used due to concerns about the structural integrity of the building.
While the full extent of the damage is still being determined, multiple premises were gutted by the fire, and other stores nearby suffered considerable fire and smoke damage.
Firefighters made the scene safe and at around 9:30 pm it was handed to ACT Policing to commence investigations to determine the cause of the incident.
According to ACT Fire and Rescue, neither the kebab shop nor the neighbouring supermarket were open at the time. One man was taken to hospital with non-critical injuries. No further details about his injuries have been released.
Several roads in the area are expected to remain closed today.
While police have already spoken to several witnesses, anyone who witnessed the explosion who has not yet talked to police is asked to contact ACT Policing Operations on 131444. Quote reference number P2042617.
