Seeking car/cycle parking options close to Woden

I have just been offered a job in Woden. It’s a good job but the parking in the area sucks and I can’t really afford parking every day 🙁

I am a keen cyclist but don’t want to cycle from Belconnen to Woden everyday due to afterwork activities. I’m looking at options of parking within 8km of Woden and then cycling in on my vintage bike in my work gear, rather than the lycra. I don’t know Woden very well and looking for some advice. Any help would be appreciated.

Um, its not that far from Belco to Woden? Why not just ride. I ride from Tuggers to Civic and if you are indeed a keen cyclist then it will be a doddle.

Edit: Google maps says 16km from town centre to town centre. A ‘keen cyclist’ would only take 1/2 an hour to do that (thats what it takes me for the 15km from Civic to Beazley St).

buy a 250cc motorcycle, cheap maintenance, rego, free parking and you won’t have no cycle anywhere.

It never ceases to amaze me about the lengths Canberrans will go to in avoiding paying for something, in this case parking.
When I moved to Canberra over 30 years ago someone gave me a print-out of Canberra jokes.
One was: A Canberran went into a corner shop and asked how much the eggs were.
The shopkeeper said $2.50 a dozen or $1.50 if they are cracked.
The Canberran replied: “crack me a dozen then”.

Lack of detail when requesting advice seems to be a feature of online forums.

That’s because they are frequented by know-it-alls, who presumably know the OP’s circumstances.

It is getting very hard to find parking at the shops in Curtin during the day. I expect a blitz will happen soon.

north curtin oval on dunstan street. then just ride along the front of curtin on the shared recreational path. it would be about 3-4 kms to woden

You don’t give any detail about the location of your job in Woden or what type of organisation or company you will be working for. (Lack of detail when requesting advice seems to be a feature of online forums.)

Public service buildings generally have arrangements for cyclists (and runners), including showers. I don’t know about smaller organisations but surely there would be somewhere you could store a bike during the day.

What time of the day are you going to start? If you can make it in by 8.30 to 8.45 there is still plenty of parking next to the old CIT at $8 a day. There may be bike racks outside of it as well.

It would really be worth scouting around first. Lots of (all?) streets in Lyons have restricted parking, as do streets in Curtin, and Phillip to the south. I don’t know about Hughes, Pearce etc. but it would be worth checking first. I’m pretty sure there is a carpark behind the Curtin shops which is unrestricted. The parking arrangements around the Health buildings on Furzer St are currently changing, with the current large open air carpark about to be closed for development, and a new multi-story park about to open.

There’s a Park ‘n Ride in Mawson, just ride a bike rather than a bus.

That or just ride Belconnen > Woden each day, it’s a nice ride past Scrivener Dam etc

Try Pearce or Lyons. anywhere Uphill from Woden. Then you can coast down to woden in the work gear, and sweat it out up hill after work.

You could always park in a suburban street somewhere in Curtin, Chifley, Hughes, Garran or Deakin?
I see some people doing that. Just change it up a bit so you don’t keep using the same street all the time. One week park in Curtin and the next week, try Deakin. Just an idea.
