Fans of recording technology, or fans of the Stiff Gins I guess may be interested by this video of the Stiff Gins listening to their wax cylinder recording at the NFSA.

Musical duo Nardi Simpson and Kaleena Briggs, AKA the Stiff Gins, listening to the wax cylinder of their song ‘Dust’ for the very first time.

In early 2013 the Stiff Gins approached the NFSA, asking about the possibility of recording a wax cylinder. Nardi Simpson and Kaleena Briggs had come across the cylinder recordings made by Tasmanian Aboriginal woman Fanny Cochrane Smith in the early years of last century and they were intrigued by the idea of making such a recording as part of the developmental work for a new show.

They’re great (The Stiff Gins). They’ve been very quiet for a while.

Recording on wax cylinders in the 21st century does tend to raise the exclusivity of your product, given the number of working playback devices out there now.

They’re great (The Stiff Gins). They’ve been very quiet for a while.

Love their name and love their music.
