When it comes to summer dining, for me, nothing beats fresh sumptuous seafood paired with a glass of chilled crisp wine. Even though Canberra is not on the coast, (it’s only major flaw, in my opinion), we still have access to all the gifts of the vast Australian coastline. From restaurants specialising in masterfully refined sushi to a platter that tastes of the Adriatic, here are three spots to try this summer.

Jimmy’s Place

In its 18 years of trade, Jimmy’s Place has been feeding locals wholesome Chinese cuisine from its Dickson location. On stepping inside the large restaurant on Woolley Street, the first clue that they are serious about seafood is the fresh tanks full of the catch of the day.

The menu is peppered with options featuring all manner of the ocean’s delights, everything from the humble fish fillet to pippies and abalone. For a hands-on experience and to ensure you are the envy of the entire restaurant, opt for either the stir-fried crab with ginger and shallot or lobster. It’s presented to you on its way to the kitchen from the tank and then arrives freshly prepared mere minutes later.

Jimmy’s Place is located at 71 Woolley Street, Dickson, and is open Wednesday to Monday for lunch and dinner.

Maestral Mediterranean Seafood Restaurant

In the jumble of shops in Weston Creek, experience a taste of the Adriatic Sea at Maestral Mediterranean Seafood Restaurant. The family-run business has been showcasing its Croatian recipes and culture for over 22 years.

With the menu made up of 90 per cent seafood, pescatarians are spoilt for choice. For a taste of a little bit of everything opt for the Seafood Platter for two with generous servings of both hot and cold items. Or to transport yourself to the Mediterranean, order the Dalmatian fish stew, Brudet. It is served with crusty bread to mop up the rich, punchy flavours of fish fillet, king prawns, Morton bay bug and black mussels cooked in tomato, onion, garlic, parsley, thyme, red wine and sherry vinegar.

Maestral Mediterranean Seafood Restaurant is located at 13 Trennery Circuit in Weston Creek and is open for dinner Tuesday to Saturday and lunch Wednesday to Friday.

RAKU combines the precision and artfulness of Japanese culinary history with the vibrant energy of modern Australian dining. The restaurant in Bunda Street, Civic is a fine dining destination with the food served on the plates as aesthetically pleasing as the minimalist interior.

The freshest of produce is procured to craft beautiful plates of sashimi, nigiri and maki rolls. For those that want to try the best of the extensive menu, surrender your tastebuds to the chef and indulge in the 12-course Royal Tasting Menu and be taken on a seafood journey starting with delicately creamy Signature Merimbula rock oysters with cucumber and tosazu.
