I’d visited Little Oink at the Cook shops a few months ago and was highly impressed so I was keen to return.
We arrived bright and early on a Sunday morning and were one of only two couples in the cafe. Yay for a peaceful breakfast – it’s a rareity when eating out.
The waitstaff informed us that they had recently brought in a new menu. I was crossing all my fingers and toes that the fantastic omelette I had a few months prior was still on the menu. Alas, it was not.
I perused the menu for a long time and I couldn’t decide on what to order. Nothing jumped out at me. I ended up deciding to go back to basics and ordered the poached eggs with a side of mushrooms.
I had assumed because there was only us and one other couple in the cafe our meals would be delivered quickly. It wasn’t super slow service but we did wait about 15-20 minutes or so.
I hate giving negative reviews, but I was pretty disappointed. When our meals came out I was underwhelemed. The toast was cold, the cube of butter in the side dish was straight out of the fridge so it was hard to spread, and the eggs were lukewarm. The mushrooms also seemed to have just been cooked in olive oil, usually mushrooms come sauteed in garlic or herbs, or seasoned with salt and pepper at the very least.
Overall, it was just a pretty bland meal. My first experience at Little Oink, as I said, was fantastic so I’m just hoping they were having an off day. I’m hesitant to return but I’m sure I’ll give them another go one day.
