The incredible expanding War Memorial

ABC Online is reporting on plans to triple the display space at the War Memorial.

I guess they’d better enjoy the good times (a cashed up tory government trying to associate itself with military glories) while they last.

But I do have to admit that I was showing a guest around last weekend, and the things that bothered me in the last expansion have been mostly addressed.

She looks younger than I expected. Does she really have dentures? Support your claim : P

(ew)

It must be a bugger, then, when the mobile coffee service drives past and belts our La Cucaracha

No, cars driving past and tooting help me keep time!

Do you click the dentures together like maracas to keep time?

No, just assisting with the action! 🙂

Holding her wig on?

No silly; the other hand is resting on the back of her head.

… and with the other hand waving at the passing traffic on Limestone Avenue.

Oh dear. I hate having to stand there with a pair of dentures in my hands while my pipe’s being cleaned! 🙂

… with her dentures out.

Yeah, but the word is she gives good head!

Perhaps she was my competition – just call me Dan Bigalow – Gunghalin gigalo.

I actually discovered Riotact through a link I was sent from a friend who works at a campbell national security department a few years ago (circa 2004ish?) It was a link to a RA contributers article and the dealings they had with LL. I shant point the finger at who as I can not remember – however – that is how I came about knowing and loving RA. Everyone knows that LL was a popular talking point/point of ridicule amongst employees in the vicinity of russell duntroon and campbell.

Perhaps Danman IS Limestone Lizzy.

I second the nomination that Danman writes a story about how he found out about RA by searching for Limestone Lizzie and the motives behind it…

Yes it is a V2 – a bit rusty and falling to bits, but there’s a very good condition one inside. In fact there are boat-loads of amazing stuff inside the two huge halls they have there at Mitchell. Tanks, planes, choppers, artillery, entire wall racks of ammo, in fact it all leaves the actual AWM displays for dead…

I can heartily recommend a visit next time the AWM has a “Big Things” open day there (once per year I think).

You’re a very strange human, Mr Danman.

And why were you looking for Limestone Lizzy on the ‘net, Mr Danman???? 🙂

Even more off topic, I learnt about RiotACT through the early “Limestone Lizzy” articles – not sure if they are still around on old RiotACT – I remember there was a shitstorm about legalities etc re posting her image up…

Hope linky works – its been a while eh 🙂

“Off topic, does anyone know what the hell that large rocket/bomb shaped thing out at Mitchell is?”

If it’s the thing on the trailer, then it’s the V2 rocket.

Not a clue, but I have an urge to drive through Mitchell later today to find out what you are talking about.

They’re nice, and they give us a chance to hurl questions & abuse at newcomers who don’t know how to read a timestamp.
I like that people are dragging up our ancient history to add comments like “Grafitti cannot be stopped”.

Whats the old thread revisited record ?

That would be this one.

Perhaps closing threads that have had x days of inactivity in the comments could be a feature of the new site to stop these bizarre thread ‘bumps’?

Not sure how difficult that would be in WordPress though.

You need to check out the old site

Nothing to say. Move along. Just searching for the earliest post I could find on RA

Smelly cheese.

Vader – Until the old lanc went in there was a very sydney-heavy bias going on there that the cynical speculated had something to do with marketting to day trippers.

The rest – Thanks for clearing up the confusion.

There’s a bit of word play involved here. The Memorial is not going to triple its space. That would be impossible without a new gallery building. They are getting a new administration building into which they are going to re-locate SOME staff areas from the main building to make a bit more room. They are only increasing their ‘Major exhibition space’ Basically Vietnam & Korea will now have separate space and be bigger. There will also be a dedicated peacekeeping gallery and a few others.

You can get more info here http://www.awm.gov.au/post45/index.asp

Simon has basically got it right.

I currently sit down there writing from a cramped space in the AWM main building ‘basement’. Where a a large percentage of this floor is used by the Research Centre admin, Multimedia, Education and Visitor Serices, and the Volunteers admin areas.

Some work shop and darkroom services will also be moved from Mitchell to the new Eastern Building.

This link should provide the official information. http://www.awm.gov.au/post45/index.asp

Actually, they’re not tripling the display space.

They’re tripling the display space for post-1945 wars (Malayan Emergency, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf Wars 1 & 2 etc). Last time I was there they were all stuck down in a very cramped space down in the basement.

My guess is that the new extension will be about the size of the ANZAC Hall, but I haven’t seen the plans to know for sure.

Cheers,
Vader

Incidentally, what were the things that bothered you about the last extension?
