Safe Shelter are looking for volunteers:

The Safe Shelter for homeless men project aims to open inner Canberra church halls one night each week and is looking for volunteers to be trained to work in the project.

A pilot program will start operating on Wednesday nights at St Columba’s Uniting Church in Braddon from early May until late September and three trained volunteers will be rostered each week to run the overnight accommodation for up to eight homeless men.

Other inner-city churches have been contacted and invited to learn about the program and consider participating on other nights of the week. Eventually it is hoped to be able to offer emergency accommodation at a hall every night of the week.

Two training courses for volunteers, each for two evenings, will be run in April, with further courses as required in later months. To balance the need to gain experience with a need to avoid too onerous a commitment, each volunteer will be expected to commit to spending one night each month, from 7.00 pm until 7.00 am, sleeping on the floor in the halls with the guests.

Anyone interested in volunteering should e-mail safeshelteract@gmail.com
