W League – Canberra United qualify for the Grand Final

By Gassed - 11 January 2009 23

Well our gals are into the final (beat Newcastle Jets 1-0).

Hopefully Sydney can beat QLD on Sunday so we get a home GF.

If that does happen, it better be at Bruce Stadium.

UPDATE: And here’s video of the score!

Well done and good luck for the Grand Final! Hopefully this will generate more interest for a Canberra A-League team.

Haha, not at all. Like you I was simply commenting on the sterling grammar of the original title.

But why do people want an A-League side? I keep asking this question on various websites but no-one seems to be able to give me an answer. The standard of football in the A-League is woeful as it is – how is expanding the league going to make things any better? Why would football fans want to pay good money to see third rate players – remember, the A-League’s stupid salary cap regulations mean you’ll only ever see the genuinely third rate, unproven or over the hill playing here?
It seems to me that the whole campaign is merely a vehicle for Ivan Slavich and his band of local wannabes to attain some sort of notoriety.

I’m hoping that the a-league team (if we get one) will be called Canberra Utd, and wear the green that the girls wear. But I’m sure there’s some marketing team somewhere dreaming up some naff name and trendy colour scheme.

d’oh…

i rekkun it is a fillip ’cause it raises the profile of football in the act, berraboy sagely notes… and apologies for my lack of typing skills to make the whole of that last bit italicised, i promise, it will never</i. happen again, i really promise! ; )

Oh, well! There goes that idea ….

I heard on the radio that Qld beat Sydney on penalties. Unfortunately the final will be held in Brisbane.

Go Girls! This is great for ACT football.

Astrojax – Why is this a filip for an A-League side? Does that mean that because Adelaide came bottom of the absurdly short W-League season (why only ten matches in the ‘home and away’ section?) that their A-League side is in danger of having it’s license revoked? How are the two competitions linked?

I’m up for a bit of cheering next week, astro, if it goes that way!

astrojax 3:17 pm 11 Jan 09

i watched the game – good ol’ aunty! – and while bare stats will tell you ‘castle had the bulk of possession and more time around the canberra goal, our girls always looked much better and really should have had two, if only sykes (i think?) knocked a square ball across to her unmarked teammate instead of trying to punch it past the excellent ‘castle ‘keeper (actually, both ‘keepers were close to player of the match), it would have sealed victory with a wad of time to spare.

good effort, neither queensland nor sydney will hold much fear for them (in fact, go sydney today and we’ll get to host it! can’t see that happening, though) so we’ve as good a shot as anyone to waltz away with the inaugural title – what a coup that’d be a fillip for an a-league side. in fact, just getting thisfar and having the support at the ground yesterday can’t have done the a-league hopes any harm…

good luck! what granny said! ; )

…if we do</i., perchance, host, what say a riot-act cheer squad at the ground next week??

Granny 3:12 pm 11 Jan 09

You go, girls!! Best of luck for the Grand Final – you are doing us proud!

“Canberra United make qualify”

I’ve been going to football since 1973 and I’ve never heard this expression.

I suppose this also means that Eamon Flanagan will be saying that this proves that Canberra should have an A-League side over on the Capital Football Website.
