W League – Canberra United qualify for the Grand Final

By Gassed 11 January 2009 23

Well our gals are into the final (beat Newcastle Jets 1-0).

Hopefully Sydney can beat QLD on Sunday so we get a home GF.

If that does happen, it better be at Bruce Stadium.

UPDATE: And here’s video of the score!

Exactly. It’s a healthy sport, and the presence of a local A-league team might inspire a lot of kids to play who otherwise wouldn’t have bothered.

Also, why stomp all over other people’s dreams when there’s no good reason to deny them?

Presumably, if you want good players in any place you need to have the young blood coming through. Aussies are as capable as anyone of playing a sport well with the will to succeed and the right training.

The quality of the game is a matter of opinion. I know many avid A-League fans who would love a team and the fact that they are drawing crowds to the W-League matches is a good indication of the support here in Canberra. I don’t see how it would be harmful. The stadium isn’t being used by anything else in that part of the year so why not?

Nambucco…why does there “need” to be a Raiders, Brumbies, Capitals? Lets not stop there…why does there “need” to be a National Library, National Art Gallery etc etc.

If there is support and funding for an A-League team in Canberra…why not!

BTW…the W-League, established this year, has each W team linked to an A-League team. Canberra was the only city granted a W-League team that didn’t have an already established A-League team.

A good sign to me that FFA wants an A League team in the Nation’s capital!

I use the word ‘need’ because that’s the word that is always bandied about by spokesmen for the Canberra A-League bid. I actually couldn’t care less if there is an A-League team in Canberra. I certainly wouldn’t go to see them because, as I’ve mentioned countless times already, I don’t think the standard of football is very good in Australia. What I object to is the brainless parrotting of the ‘fact’ that Canberra is somehow worse off because there is no football team in the nation’s capital, or that the presence of a side in Canberra will in some way influence FIFA to award World Cup hosting rights to Australia – which it won’t.

I don’t think there’s any doubt that the FFA would like to see a team in Canberra, just like they’d like to see multiple teams in Melbourne and Sydney and teams from Cairns, Wollongong, Geelong, etc etc, but that (and again I’ve said this many times) doesn’t mean the standard of football will be any good. The Brumbies and the Raiders (can’t talk about the Capitals as I have no interest in Basketball whatsoever), with proven track records of success in their respective competitions still have trouble attracting and/or retaining top quality players to this area, and there’s no reason to believe that any football team based here would be any different.
