With Elemental on Lonsdale Street and now Paleo Cafe open on Mort Street, Braddon has two cafes dedicated to the paleo way, literally on parallel streets.

The Paleo Cafe is a cafe and health food franchise, and it’s only been open for a little while now. It opens at 7am, so I took the opportunity to have an early breakfast before work. If you don’t like crowds and want fast service, 7am on a weekday is definitely a good time to go.

As I walked into the café, I was intrigued by the health food products that are stocked on the shelves. I even found a bottle of activated charcoal?! Apparently you eat it.

We took a seat and looked over the menu, which looked normal enough and sounded pretty good. I ordered the bacon and free-range eggs with sautéed baby spinach, savoury bread, a golden sweet potato rosti and your choice of bacon ($14.50).

Mike ordered the mushroom bruschetta (seared mushrooms with garlic, basil and parsley served on two slices of savoury bread and topped with crumbled cashew cheese, $14.50). He also added poached eggs for an extra $3.50. We also got two paleo balls: coffee and vanilla.

We ate the balls as we waited. The coffee one wasn’t great but the vanilla one was pretty good.

I was excited when breakfast came out because not only did it look pretty fresh, but it had American bacon, which is the best bacon ever! If you haven’t tried it, you need to!

Overall my meal was okay. Having an understanding of the paleo diet, I know why I personally didn’t find it exciting. The bacon was actually the best bit. I wasn’t a fan of the paleo-style savoury toast or the rosti. In saying that, I love it when cafés poach their eggs right – it makes me a happy girl.

Mike was happy with the eggs and definitely loved the bacon but his mushrooms seemed undercooked.

If you are living a paleo lifestyle and or are just curious, then yes, I recommend this café. But if you’re like me and not totally sold on paleo food, perhaps this isn’t the cafe for you.

The Paleo Café is located at 44/38 Mort Street, Braddon.

Paleo doesn’t allow dairy … but they serve cow’s milk in their coffee …

A lot of cafes will make an exception to include cow’s milk in their coffee so that they don’t totally limit their customer base. Just look at Sweet Bones.

Strange re Sweet Bones – their veganism is based on no cruelty to animals, but ALL dairy involves killing male calves. So they definitely aren’t vegan. An exception re dairy is much more understandable in a Paleo cafe than a vegan one …

I’d love to see your stats on how “all” dairy involves killing male calves. I was more under the impression that cows are now bred to produce milk all the time. Happy to admit if I’m wrong though.

Umm, what is the “Paleo Diet”? Not some strange throwback of an idea that the cavemen had healthier diets than food available to us nowadays is it? They didn’t.

Paleo’s included a percentage of cannibalism in their diet. So, umm, how you gonna cover that base?

Whole thing sounds just like more facile trendoid rubbish to me.
