Canberra’s fireworks over Lake Burley Griffin may have begun early at 9 pm, but the ACT’s first baby for 2024 was right on time.
Baby Harrison Egan arrived at Calvary John James at 12:22 am, the first baby born in Canberra for the new year. He is a third child for proud parents Lauren and Jackson Egan of Goulburn.
Weighing a healthy 3320g, Harrison was delivered by midwife Linda and student midwife Jennifer. In 2023, more than 880 babies were born at Calvary John James.
Thousands gathered on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin to watch the annual fireworks display at 9 pm on New Years’ Eve, after the ACT government abandoned the traditional midnight display.
The 15-minute fireworks display took place on the central basin of Lake Burley Griffin and Commonwealth Avenue Bridge.
ACT Policing say they were were generally pleased with the behaviour of people attending New Year’s Eve celebrations last night.
“No significant incidents occurred however a small number of people were engaged by police for matters including family violence incidents, public urination and failing to adhere to exclusion orders.
“People were also taken into protective custody due to their level of intoxication”, a police spokesperson said.
Drivers have also been reminded alcohol and other drugs can take many hours or days to clear a person’s system and people should consider this if driving today.
Double demerit points remain in place until midnight tonight (Monday, 1 January 2024).
